CSUN Hosts SD State Wednesday; Open Big West Play against Cal Poly

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN (10-15) softball team returns home after a 20-game road trip this week. Playing at home for the first time since Feb. 12, the Matadors host South Dakota State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
South Dakota State is on a 10-game swing through California that began over the week at the UC Santa Barbara Spring Break Bash. The Jackrabbits went 6-0 during the tournament including a doubleheader sweep of Manhattan College on Monday. South Dakota State brings a 15-7 record to Northridge.
As a team, the Jackrabbits are averaging just over one home run per game (1.05) which ranks the team 43rd in Division I. Cylie Halvorson has hit a team-high eight home runs and has driven in a team high 24 runs both of which have her ranked in the top 75 in Division I this week.
Four different SDSU pitchers have at least one win. led by Tori Kniesche who is 7-3 with a save. She has five complete games in 63 innings this season. This is the first time that CSUN and South Dakota State are playing softball.
CSUN will open Big West Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Cal Poly. On Saturday, the Matadors and the Mustangs will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader before concluding play on Sunday at noon. All games this week will be streamed on ESPN+ with links on GoMatadors.com.
On Saturday, CSUN will be hosting a Gold Lace game against Cal Poly. The Gold Lace game will help Lacing Up 4 Pediatric Cancer support the Go4theGoal Foundation to help kids battling cancer.
Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer began in the fall of 2011. Since then, professional, college and youth teams have participated in raising funds and awareness for the No. 1 disease killer of children. To date, over a half million athletes have supported our cause. $4 from every $5 pair of laces and 100% of all donations directly benefit kids and families in the state where the funds are raised.

After opening the season by dropping the first 13 games in which they played, Cal Poly is 5-2 over their last season and have a 5-15 record coming into CSUN. Jessica Clements is fourth in the Big West and 54th in Division I this week in batting average as she is hitting .433. Maddie Amos is the team leader in home runs (2) and RBI (13). Despite a 4-6 record, Krystyna Allman is third in the Big West in ERA. She has struck out 39 in 64.2 innings this season. Dating back to 1979, this will be the 139th, 140th, and 141st times that CSUN and Cal Poly are playing softball. The Matadors lead the all-time series 83-54-1.
The Matadors went 1-4 last weekend at the University of San Diego Tournament. Sami Garcia hit .571 in four appearances during the tournament including her first career three-hit game against the host Toreros on Sunday. Kenedee Jamerson went 1-2 in three starts during the tournament. She struck out a career high nine against Weber State on Mar. 11 and posted 17 strikeouts in 15 innings on the weekend.
