Matadors Drop Second Straight to No. 7 Pepperdine

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN Men's Volleyball team completed the non-conference portion of the 2022 season Friday, falling to the visiting Pepperdine Waves by the score of 25-13, 25-8, 25-21 inside The Matadome.
Pepperdine, which hit a school rally scoring era record .586 in the win, improves to 11-6 while handing the Matadors their fifth straight loss. CSUN drops to 5-8 on the season with eight conference matches remaining in the regular season.
KEY STATISTICS
• The Matadors had trouble getting their offense on track until the final set as Kyle Hobus led the team with seven kills (.059) on 17 swings. Hobus did add three blocks, three digs and pair of assists for CSUN.
• Redshirt junior Daniel Wetter added six kills while hitting .455 on 11 attacks but every other Matador attacker wound up with a negative hitting percentage. Setter Donovan Constable had 20 assists and one kill in the loss.
• Despite hitting an impressive .476 in the final set, the Matadors wound up hitting .053 (25-21-76) as a team. CSUN was also out-blocked by a 5-3 margin and was out-dug 23-9.
• Alex Gettinger led the Waves with 13 kills, hitting .800 on 15 swings while Jaylen Jasper added 10 kills on 14 errorless swings to hit .714.

After scoring the first five points of the match, the Waves eventually led by six at 8-2 lead in the opening set. Pepperdine extended the lead up by eight at 11-3 on a block by Jasper. The Waves would lead by 11 at 16-5 after a CSUN attack error and a kill by Gettinger. Pepperdine would lead by as many as 12 (20-8) before settling for the 25-13 win.
SET 2
The Matadors had no answer for the visitors in the second set as Pepperdine connected for 12 kills while committing just one error. Conversely, CSUN posted four kills and committed eight errors in hitting -.167. The Waves opened up another early lead, this time 6-0 before pushing the lead to 11-1. A Jasper kill gave Pepperdine a 12-point advantage at 16-4 and the Matadors were only able to muster four points over the remainder of the set in falling 25-8.Â

The final set was close throughout as the Matadors and Waves battled through 10 ties. With the score tied at 12-12, Pepperdine scored twice to take a 14-12 lead. The lead swelled to 18-15 after another CSUN attack error, and eventually 20-16 after consecutive kills by the Waves. The Matadors would get back to within three on several occasions down the stretch, the last at 23-20 following a Hobus kill, before Pepperdine closed out the 25-21 win.

The Matadors will return to Big West play next week as CSUN travels to Honolulu to take on the fourth-ranked Rainbow Warriors in a pair of matches (Mar. 25-26).
