Matadors Host Dixie State on Tuesday Afternoon

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (10-9, 0-3 Big West) returns to Matador Field for the first time in 23 days on Tuesday when the Matadors host Dixie State at 2 p.m. Ghizal Hasan has the call on ESPN+ and GoMatadors.com/Radio. Tuesday represents the first meeting between the two programs in baseball.

RHP Jake Dahle (1-1, 6.94 ERA) vs. RHP Lucas Braun (0-2, 6.75 ERA)
The Matadors completed a 12-game road stretch last Sunday. CSUN finished the road swing with a 5-7 record, which included a series win at McNeese State along with single victories over Stanford, Grand Canyon and Loyola Marymount.
CSUN opened Big West play last weekend in San Luis Obispo against Cal Poly. The Matadors would suffer a three-game sweep at the hands of the Mustangs as Cal Poly rallied to win game one 6-4 before holding on for 8-4 and 6-4 wins. In the opener, CSUN held a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning before the Mustangs rallied for five runs to storm in front. The Mustangs posted another big inning in game two, this time in the third inning, when they scored five again in an eventual victory. CSUN would trim a 6-1 deficit to two in the bottom of the ninth of the finale before ultimately falling short again by two runs.
Blake Sodersten had the best start for the Matadors over the weekend, posting seven-plus innings of work and three runs allowed to go with a season-high seven strikeouts. Elias Jauregui highlighted the relief pitchers with 3.2 shutout innings in game two. On the hitting side, Gabe Gonzalez hit a grand slam in the opener as he finished with seven RBI in the series. Bart West drove in four runs in the series and belted a three-run home run in game two.
On the Big West leaderboards, Graysen Tarlow has moved into third place on the batting list with a .385 average followed by West in fifth place with a .362 average. Gonzalez is in first place in the conference in home runs with five while he is second in RBI (18), fourth in slugging percentage (.579) and seventh in on-base percentage (.438). Moody ranks second in runs scored (17), third in home runs (4) and fifth in RBI (15). On the pitching side, Sodersten is tied with Blaine Traxel for second place in the Big West in wins (3) while Sodersten ranks second in innings pitched (32.1) and 10th in ERA (3.34). As a team, the Matadors are first in the Big West in runs (118) and RBI (105).
For the second consecutive Tuesday, junior right-handed pitcher Lucas Braun earns the start for the Matadors. Last Tuesday at LMU, Braun tossed two innings, allowing a run to go with two strikeouts. On the season, Braun has posted a 6.75 ERA with eight strikeouts in 10.2 innings of work.
A Closer Look at Dixie State
The Trailblazers (11-8, 6-3 WAC) are in their second season at the Division I level in 2022. Last season, Dixie State went 24-32 overall, but went 21-15 in WAC play for a fourth-place finish in the league. Prior to this season, the Trailblazers were picked to finish fifth in the newly formed WAC West Division. Dixie State won two of three games last weekend against New Mexico State as the team has won six of the last eight games. Chris Pfatenhauer is in his 10th season as head coach of the program.
Kaden Hollow leads the squad with a .366 batting average to go with three homers and 15 RBI. Chase Rodriguez is a close second in batting with a .362 average while Shane Taylor has a .360 batting average. Taylor also has a team-high 20 RBI with three home runs on the season. Tuesday's starter Jake Dahle sports a 6.94 ERA with nine strikeouts in 11.2 innings of work.
