
CSUN Travels to Hawai'i This Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Coming off an opening weekend sweep to begin Big West Conference softball play, CSUN travels to the University of Hawai'i this weekend. The action starts Friday night with a single game set for 9 p.m. PDT/6 p.m. HT.
The series concludes with a Saturday doubleheader set for 5 p.m. PDT/2 p.m. HT. The links to the live stats coverage will be available on GoMatadors.com. Hawai'i won two of three games at UC Santa Barbara to begin Big West play last weekend. The Rainbow Wahine are 8-10 overall. Ka'ena Keliinoi, who entered the UCSB series with one RBI, drove in seven runs against the Gauchos. She hit .333 with one home run on the weekend.
Brianna Lopez pitched in all three games at UC Santa Barbara, winning one, losing one, and saving one. Lopez and Chloe Borges have both won four games for Hawai'i. The duo has pitched all but 7.1 innings in 18 games for the Rainbow Wahine. This weekend will mark the 40th, 41st, and 42nd times the teams have played softball, with the Rainbow Wahine leading the all-time series 20-18-1.
CSUN's sweep of Cal Poly gave the Matadors its first 3-0 start in Big West play since 2015 when the Matadors also swept the Mustangs to begin league competition. It is only the fifth time CSUN joined the Big West in softball in 1997 that the Matadors begin conference action 3-0.
Jaymi Steward was named Big West Field Player of the Week on Mar. 21. Steward hit .600 during CSUN's sweep of Cal Poly. Steward recorded a .700 slugging percentage and a .636 on-base percentage during the series. Steward drove in five runs and scored twice. In addition, she stole two bases and did not commit an error in eight chances in center field. Steward leads the team in RBI (15) and stolen bases (12). She is second in batting average (.281).
Kaylee Escutia hit .600 during the Cal Poly series. The freshman right fielder scored three times and recorded two RBI against the Mustangs. All three of the CSUN pitchers, Kenedee Jamerson, Alexis Martinez, and Allie Gardiner, who saw action in the circle against the Mustangs, won a game in the series. The Matadors also outscored Cal Poly 21-4 during the weekend.
CSUN's victory over Cal Poly last Saturday was the 1,475th in the program's history. Of the 301 teams that play Division I softball, the Matadors rank 13th in all-time victories and have a record of 1475-943-12 as of Mar. 20.
