Hawai'i Edges CSUN in Both Games of Doubleheader

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i edged CSUN in a pair of one-run contests in Big West softball action Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

GAME 2
UP NEXT
CSUN (13-19, 3-2 Big West) and Hawai'i (10-10, 4-1 Big West) close the series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. PDT/12 p.m. HT.
GAME 1
- The Rainbow Wahine defeated the Matadors 4-3 in the opener.
- Hawai'i opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Nawai Kaupe and Maya Nakamura hit solo home runs.
- With two outs in the top of the third, Sami Garcia walked with the bases loaded, which allowed Alexis Lemus to score the first Matador run.
- Mikayla Carman tied the game in the fourth when her ground out allowed Vinessa Nunez to score.
- The Rainbow Wahine loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. Ka'ena Keliinoi doubled in two runs. Allie Gardiner relieved Kenedee Jamerson. After hitting a batter to load the bases, Gardiner got the next three outs to keep the score at 4-2.
- Kaylee Escutia and Nunez opened the CSUN sixth with back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced a base on a Briana Lopez wild pitch.
- With one out, Aaliyah Swan put down a bunt towards first. First baseman Dallas Millwood flipped the ball to the catcher, Izabella Martinez, to get the Escutia out at home. Nunez got caught in a rundown between third and home on the play.
- Martinez threw to Kaupe, covering third, who attempted to tag out Nunez. Kaupe then tossed to the centerfielder, Brittnee Rossi covering second to try and get Swan, who was trying to advance to second, but the throw glanced off her glove, allowing Nunez to score.
- The Rainbow Wahine loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Gardiner struck out Kaeli Bush to end the inning.
- Jaymi Steward was hit by a Lopez pitch with one out in the seventh. Kennedi Sorensen grounded out to third, advancing Steward to second. Garcia grounded out too short to end the game.
- Kaupe posted two of the seven Hawai'i hits. Lopez struck out six and walked four to pick up the complete-game victory. Nunez recorded half of the CSUN hits as she went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
GAME 2
- Hawai'i defeated CSUN 4-3 in the nightcap.
- Steward broke the seal with one out in the top of the third with her third home run.
- Martinez tied the score in the bottom of the third with an RBI single that plated Rossi.
- Keliinoi gave the Rainbow Wahine the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI single. Hawai'i took advantage of a CSUN error later in the inning to score an unearned run which increased the advantage to 4-1.
- Steward singled to lead off the fifth. She stole second before Sorensen walked. Alexa Landeros successfully sacrificed both runners up a base. Nunez grounded out to third which allowed Steward to score. Swan followed with a single that drove in pinch-runner Mia Cortez.
- Carman singled to begin the Matador sixth. She moved to second on a Lemus sacrifice bunt. A Chloe Borges pitch hit steward. Sorensen flew out to right. Landeros flew out to left to end the inning.
- Nunez began the seventh with a single up the middle. Swan successfully sacrificed Nunez to second. Pinch-hitter Samantha Kwiatkowski struck out. Garcia came up as a pinch-hitter lined out too short to end the game.
- CSUN outhit Hawai'i 10-7 but left 10 on base (UH stranded only four). Steward went 2-for-3 with two runs to pace the Matadors. Martinez was 2-for-3 for the Rainbow Wahine.
