Matadors Host Long Beach State in Weekend Series

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (11-9, 0-3 Big West) returns to Big West play with its home conference-opening series against Long Beach State this weekend. The series starts Friday at 3 p.m. and continues Saturday at 2 p.m. before wrapping up Sunday at 1 p.m. Ghizal Hasan has the call for all three games on ESPN+ and GoMatadors.com/Radio.

Long Beach State leads CSUN 84-67-1 in the all-time series that dates back to 1959. The Matadors though hold a narrow 36-35 edge in games played at Matador Field. The teams split a four-game series at Blair Field last season with the Matadors winning the opener and the finale. Prior to last season, the Dirtbags had won nine consecutive series over the Matadors. The teams have not played at Matador Field since the 2018 season when Long Beach State won two of three games.
The Matadors snapped a three-game losing streak on Tuesday with a 6-4 victory over Dixie State. Gabe Gonzalez and Bart West belted home runs in the win while Lucas Braun earned his first win at CSUN with four shutout innings to start the game. Braun also struck out a career-high six batters in the victory. Blake Schriever tossed the final 1.1 innings, holding off the Trailblazers for his fourth save of the season. The win over Dixie State improved CSUN's record at Matador Field this season to 5-0.
Blake Sodersten makes his third consecutive Friday start this week against the Dirtbags. Sodersten has a 3-1 record with a 3.34 ERA and 24 strikeouts to go with three quality starts. Ryan Wentz will follow Sodersten by starting on Saturday as he holds a 1-4 record with a 4.10 ERA and 14 strikeouts. Wentz has two quality starts on the season. CSUN's Sunday starter will be named later in the weekend.
On the Big West leaderboards, Gonzalez tops the league with his six home runs while he ranks second in RBI (19), fourth in slugging percentage (.640) and sixth in on-base percentage (.442). In batting average, West ranks third in the conference with a .380 average followed by Graysen Tarlow in fourth place with a .366 average. Kai Moody ranks second in the Big West in runs (18) and third in home runs (4). Also near the top of the conference, Andrew Sojka is third in the league in runs (17) and stolen bases (6). On the pitching side, Sodersten is second in the conference in innings pitched (32.1) and wins (3), and 10th in ERA (3.34). Schriever is up to second place in saves (4).
As a group, the Matadors share the Big West lead in home runs (21) with UC Santa Barbara while CSUN ranks second in runs scored (124). CSUN is also 15th nationally in double plays turned (18).
A Closer Look at Long Beach State
The Dirtbags have gone 11-8 with a 2-1 mark in Big West play. Long Beach State has won nine of its last 11 games including two of three from Hawai'i this past weekend. The Dirtbags have won three of five games away from Blair Field this season. LBSU was the preseason favorite to win the Big West Conference in a poll completed by the league's head coaches. Head coach Eric Valenzuela is in his third season leading the Dirtbags.
Tanner Carlson tops the Big West in batting average (.435) while he has nine RBI. Chase Luttrell has a team-high 17 RBI to go with three home runs and 10 doubles. Rocco Peppi is also hitting above the .300 mark with a .313 average with 14 runs scored. Jonathon Long has a team-best four home runs with 15 RBI and a .290 batting average. The Dirtbags have two of top-five ERA leaders in the Big West on their staff as Luis Ramirez has a 0.36 ERA with 28 strikeouts while Jack Noble holds a 1.98 ERA with 26 strikeouts. As a team, LBSU is 15th in the nation in ERA (3.05).
