Matadors Head to Long Beach State This Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN Softball team (13-20, 3-3 Big West) remains on the road this week as the Matadors travel to Long Beach State. CSUN and The Beach open play Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

The series concludes on Sunday when the teams face each other in a 1 p.m. matchup. ESPN+ will stream all three games with links on GoMatadors.com.

Long Beach State is 14-16, 4-2 in the Big West after taking 2-of-3 from UC Davis this past weekend at home. Naomi Hernandez leads The Beach in hitting (.400), home runs (2), RBI (17), slugging percentage (.522), and on-base percentage (.462). In addition, four different pitchers have recorded at least one win for The Beach.

Shelby Frutoz leads the team with a 5-3 mark. Samantha Fowler is 4-4 with 61 strikeouts in 18 appearances. Long Beach State leads the all-time series 70-50, dating back to the beginning of the series in 1979.

Last weekend, the Matadors dropped three games at Hawai'i by a combined four runs. The Rainbow Wahine won both games of last Saturday's doubleheader by a 4-3 score. UH defeated CSUN 3-1 in the series finale last Sunday. Jaymi Steward and Vinessa Nunez both hit .500 during the weekend.

Steward is off to a solid start to Big West play. Steward is hitting .563 (9-16) through six Big West games with two home runs and seven RBI. The redshirt senior has posted a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .682 on-base percentage while scoring five runs. She is 3-3 in stolen bases and has not committed an error in 18 chances (17 PO-1a) in centerfield.

The four top hitters in Big West-only games, Savannah Magadan (.667), Cam Cecil (.600), Steward, and Ashleigh Inae (.545), will be featured this weekend.Â
