Long Beach State Edges CSUN Twice in Big West Doubleheader

LONG BEACH, Calif.—For the second consecutive Saturday, a Big West opponent edged the CSUN Softball team in a pair of one-run games as the Matadors fell to Long Beach State Saturday afternoon at the LBSU Softball Complex.
GAME 1
Long Beach State defeated CSUN 1-0 in the opener.
The lone run of game one was scored in the bottom of the third when Ashleigh Inae drove in Sara Olson with a single. Jaymi Steward led off the CSUN fourth with the first Matadors' hit. She stole second and advanced to third on an error with two outs. Sami Garcia grounded out to second to keep the score 1-0.
The Beach advanced runners to second and third in the bottom of the fourth with one out. However, CSUN starter Kenedee Jamerson got the next outs, including a strikeout to end the threat.
Alexis Lemus doubled with one out in the top of the sixth. Ariel Gomez pinch-ran for Lemus as Steward came to bat. Steward singled up the middle to push Gomez to third. Kennedi Sorensen saw a strike from Samantha Fowler as Steward stole second.
Sorensen hit a grounder to short. Gomez broke for home, where Marissa Caballero threw her out. Pinch-hitter Paloma Usquiano was hit by a Fowler pitch to load the bases. Fowler struck out Vinessa Nunez to bring the inning to a close.
Fower tossed a three-hitter. She faced only five over the limit as she struck out five and walked one. Jamerson threw a four-hitter. The 5-8 lefty struck out eight and walked three. Steward recorded two of the three hits for the Matadors.
GAME 2
Long Beach State edged CSUN 6-5 in the nightcap.
CSUN loaded the bases in the top of the first. Nunez hit a fly ball to right field that was held up by the wind and where Lilyanna Martinez caught it.
Olson's two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the second earned Long Beach State the lead. The Matadors threatened again in the top of the third. Steward singled for the second time in game two with one out. Sorensen worked out a walk. Long Beach State starter Shelby Frutoz came back to record consecutive outs to get The Beach out of the inning.
The Beach scored four in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Sinclair Lawnhorn's home run. Mia Stankiewicz and Mikayla Carman recorded back-to-back singles with two outs in the fourth. A Frutoz pitch hit Lemus to load the bases for Steward, who doubled down the left-field line to drive in Stankiewicz and Carman. Sorensen singled up the middle to score Lemus and Steward for a 6-4 game.
Steward came to the plate with two outs in the top of the sixth as the tying run against Long Beach State reliever Sophia Fernandez. Steward worked the count to 2-2 before flying out to the left-field warning track to conclude the frame.
Sorensen led off the seventh with a double to right-center. Gomez entered as a pinch-runner before Usquiano flew out to center. Alexa Landeros grounded out to third, allowing Gomez to move up a base. Nunez singled to center to drive in Gomez. Pinch-hitter Kylie Galindo flew out to end the game.
Olson was 3-for-3 with three RBI to pace The Beach. Rebekah Durazo was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Steward went 3-for-4 while Sorensen was 2-for-2 with a walk. Carman was 2-for-3.
