#25 CSUN Drops Two at Aztec Invite

SAN DIEGO, Calif.---No. 25 CSUN Water Polo (8-8) suffered a pair of losses at the Aztec Invitational on Sunday at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Matadors fell to No. 19 Princeton 9-8 and No. 21 San Diego State 14-10. Dorottya Telek combined to score eight goals on the day while Anna Pal added five. Meghan Lopez played both matches in front of the cage, totaling 17 saves.
GAME 1 RECAP
It would be a defensive struggle for most of the first quarter against Princeton as Pal scored first to give CSUN a 1-0 lead before Laura Larkin squared the match up at the four-minute mark. The game would remain tied until Jessica Matkovich hit a buzzer beater to end the first quarter. In the second quarter, Telek gave CSUN a 3-1 lead but Princeton responded with goals from Kayla Yelensky and Genevieve Fraipont. Telek added another goal to put the Matadors up 4-3 while the CSUN defense held strong the rest of the half, holding the Tigers scoreless.Â
Princeton would come out strong to start the third period, scoring three-straight times including receiving two tallies from Rachel Carver to storm ahead. After nearly going scoreless in the third quarter, Telek ended the period with her third goal, bringing the Matadors to within 6-5. The Tigers though started the fourth quarter in similar fashion to the third with three more goals.
CSUN trailed 9-5 with four minutes to play before forging a late-game rally. Telek notched her fourth goal before Pal hit the net at the 2:21 mark. The Matadors received a late goal from Pal with 34 seconds left to go, cutting the deficit to one, but could not draw even in the closing seconds.
Lopez had 10 saves as well as an assist while Tatum Scarry, Nicole Thomas, Shelby Hovanesian and Kylee Jansen also had an assist apiece.

GAME 2 RECAP
CSUN got off to a strong start on the defensive end, holding San Diego State scoreless in the opening period. Meanwhile, Valeria Martinez and Pal hit the back of the net to give the Matadors a two-goal lead. Pal would score yet again on a power play to start the second quarter, giving CSUN a 3-0 lead. The Aztecs though turned the tables on the Matadors with a strong six-plus minutes to end the half. Three goals over a two-minute span tied the match at 3-3 before Karli Canale gave San Diego State the lead with 2:48 left on the clock. Rose Kanemy put the Matadors in a 5-3 hole in the final minute before Helena Sandhagen scored with 19 seconds to play to bring CSUN to within 5-4 at intermission.
In the third, CSUN fell behind 6-4 before Telek struck the netting on a penalty shot. San Diego State answered with two-straight goals to push the lead to 8-5 but Telek bookended the third quarter with another tally, cutting the lead to two.
The Aztecs would jump on the Matadors to start the fourth quarter, picking up three consecutive goals to extend to an 11-6 lead. The Matadors scored four times in the final quarter but were unable to pull any closer than four the rest of the way.
Martinez had two assists in the match while Pal and Hovanesian chipped in with one apiece. Lopez posted seven more saves in a full 32 minutes in the pool.
