#24 CSUN Returns Home to Host #16 UC Santa Barbara

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo (8-8, 0-2 Big West) returns to Matador Pool on Friday for a Big West matchup with No. 16 UC Santa Barbara at noon. Live stats will be provided for the match.
The Matadors have just one match set this week after playing five matches over a three-day span last weekend. CSUN played at the Convergence Tournament last Friday, March 4 where the Matadors defeated Villanova 10-9 and McKendree 13-4. A day later, the Matadors would fall at UC San Diego 11-5 in a Big West match before wrapping up the weekend with losses to Princeton (9-8) and San Diego State (14-10) at the Aztec Invitational.
Dorottya Telek led the way with 13 goals over the five matches last weekend while Anna Pal had seven and the quartet of Jessica Matkovich, Kylee Jansen, Helena Sandhagen and Valeria Martinez had four apiece. Meghan Lopez started and played every minute in front of the cage, totaling 44 saves.
Telek enters the weekend tied with Long Beach State's Orsi Hertzka for the Big West lead in goals with 48 while she ranks second in the conference in points (66) and seventh in assists (18). Pal is second in the Big West in assists (23), fifth in points (50) and tied for 10th in goals (27). Three other Matadors have scored double-digit goals this season, which include Jansen (20), Sandhagen (16) and Martinez (11).
In net, Lopez is third in the Big West in saves at 103 while Piper McCulloch is in ninth place at 42. Lopez has a 9.85 goals-against-average in a team-high 328 minutes in the pool.
Friday is the second meeting this season between CSUN and UC Santa Barbara as the Gauchos took the first meeting, 17-9, on Feb. 13 at the Triton Invitational. UCSB holds a 21-18 edge in the all-time series and has won five-straight games including two in overtime. CSUN's last win over UCSB came on April 29, 2017, by a 5-3 margin.
A Closer Look at UC Santa Barbara
The 16th-ranked Gauchos hold a 10-8 overall record and 0-1 mark in Big West play. In its only match last week, UCSB opened Big West action with a 16-8 loss to UC Irvine. The team has gone 6-5 away home this season. Due to COVID-19, the Gauchos did not finish their 2021 season and compiled a 3-5 record for the season.
Leigh Lyter leads the team with 36 goals to go with 21 steals and 10 assists. Caitlyn Snyder has a team-high 68 points with 37 assists and 31 goals. Other 20-goal scorers on the team include Nina Munson (28), Annie Kuester (23) and Sarah Owens (21). Madison Button has a 9.71 goals-against-average with 38 saves in front of the cage.
