Utah State Edges CSUN 4-3
3/9/2022 7:55:00 PM | Women's Tennis
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Utah State defeated CSUN 4-3 in women's tennis action Wednesday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex.
Lisa Kung and Zeynep Naz Ozturk defeated Magdalena Hedrzak and Sasha Turchak 6-1 in the No. 2 slot to begin the meet. Jolene Coetzee and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso tied doubles up when they defeated Annaliese County and Sidnee Lavatai 6-4 at No. 1. The Aggies took the double point when Sidnee Millian and Zara Ryan defeated Victoria Santibañez Luna and Jenna Dorian 7-5.
Hedrzak led off singles play with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 3. Hedrzak trailed in the second set and stormed back to win five games in a row which helped her to the victory.
"I think the key to winning was that I found her weaker shot and was able to take advantage of that," Hedrzak said. "I realized that I play to low above the net, and that made the ball easier for her to hit. (Assistant) coach James (Ciuffo) noticed a couple of other important things that I could do which helped me. I changed those things and improved my concentration and I won five games in a row in the second set. Overall, I'm happy about my performance and my fight to the end today."
Nar Ozturk handed Santibañez Luna a 6-4, 6-4 defeat at No. 5. Dorian went to three sets at No. 6 after dropping the first set to Lavatai 6-3. She came back to win 6-1, 6-0. Kung and Fraile Toboso went to three sets at No. 2 singles. Fraile Toboso won the opening set 6-3 before Kung came back to win the next two 6-4, 6-1.
Millian clinched the dual in favor of Utah State when she defeated Coetzee 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 during the No. 1 match. Turchak closed the day in favor of the Matadors with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) victory over County at No. 4.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GARY VICTOR
"It was a tough loss, but I'm very proud of our fight while playing shorthanded. We had our opportunities and fell just short, but it was not for a lack of effort."
