Stankiewicz's Home Run Propels CSUN To Sweep of UC Davis
4/16/2022 4:40:00 PM | Softball
DAVIS, Calif.—Mia Stankiewicz's two-out home run in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as CSUN defeated UC Davis 4-3 to complete a Big West softball sweep Saturday afternoon at La Rue Field.
On the third pitch of the game, Alexis Lemus hit her second home run of the weekend, an opposite field shot to left, to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead. Alexa Landeros led off the CSUN second with a triple. Vinessa Nunez walked on four pitches and stole second. With one out, Aaliyah Swan walked to load the bases. Mikayla Carman singled up the middle to drive in Landeros and Nunez. UC Davis starter Kenedi Davis retired the next two Matadors to keep the score 3-0.
The Aggies opened the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles from Anna Dethlefson and Sarah Starks. Reese Mattley drove in Dethlefson with a single as Starks advanced to second. Bella Pahulu's sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base. Sarah Nakahara hit a grounder to Kenedee Jamerson in the circle. Jamerson threw home to get Starks at the plate, leaving UC Davis with runners on first and second. Alyssa Ito grounded out too short to end the inning.
With runners on first and second and two outs, Ito made a diving catch of a Stankiewicz liner in right to turn back the CSUN threat. Alexis Martinez relieved Jamerson to begin the UC Davis third. With one out, Martinez hit Libbie McMahan. Delaney Diaz reached on a fielder's choice as McMahan was retired at second. Dethlefson reached on an error to keep the inning alive. Starks also reached on an error to load the bases. Mattley grounded out too short for the final out.
Keyed by a Carman double, the Matadors loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fourth. However, Davis induced Kaylee Escutia into flying out to left for the third out of the inning.
Martinez retired the first two Aggies in the bottom of the fourth. Ito singled before Sommer Kilsing walked. McMahan doubled in Ito to cut the lead to 3-2. Allie Gardiner relieved Martinez and gave up the tying run when Diaz singled to center.
Stankiewicz's home run in the top of the fifth was the first of the season for the redshirt sophomore.
UC Davis stranded a runner on in the fifth and the sixth. Dethlefson singled to begin the bottom of the seventh. She advanced to second when Starks grounded out to first. Mattley flew out to left for the second out. Pahulu grounded out to second to end the game.
