Matadors Drop 13-9 Battle to UC Irvine at Big West Championship
4/21/2022 4:34:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
HONOLULU---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo's season ended in the first round of the Big West Championship on Thursday with a 13-9 loss to No. 5 UC Irvine at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Matadors battled back from an early four-goal deficit to tie the game in the third quarter but the Anteaters ended the game on a 7-3 run to close out a win. Dorottya Telek and Anna Pal scored three goals apiece while Meghan Lopez had 13 saves in front of the cage.
CSUN struggled at the start of the match, falling behind 4-0 in the first period. UCI took advantage of two CSUN exclusions including a costly penalty call on Tatum Scarry to surge in front. Scarry though bounced back with a goal at the 2:03 mark to put the Matadors on scoreboard.
The Matadors entered the second period trailing 4-1 but would turn the momentum to their side to close the half. The teams traded goals over the opening two-plus minutes of the period before CSUN took control. The Matadors drew a pair of exclusions and made the 6-on-5 advantages pay off with goals from Madison Little and Pal. Ariana Bockstahler gave the Anteaters some breathing with a tally with 1:33 left to play, however, CSUN pulled to within a goal with a buzzer beater from Telek.
The momentum continued to swing the Matadors' way in the early moments of the third period as Pal tied the game at 6-6 in the opening minute. UCI though regained the lead a minute later on a goal from Elena Flynn on another penalty shot. CSUN drew an exclusion in the third quarter but could not take advantage while the Anteaters seized control with three-straight goals from Jessica Lynch. Kili Skibby ended a 5-0 run for the Anteaters that put CSUN behind 11-6.
CSUN outscored the Anteaters by a 3-2 margin in the fourth quarter but it was not enough to make up the gap. Telek completed a hat trick early in the fourth quarter before Carly Bockstahler scored on a power play to close the scoring in the contest.
GAME NOTES
Telek completed one of the most impressive freshman campaigns in CSUN history on Thursday. With three goals, Telek finished with 77 goals scored, the second-most in a single season in team history. The 77 goals are the most scored by a first-year player in team history while the total is three short of Whitney Delgado's all-time school mark of 80 in 2010. Telek added two assists in Thursday's match to push her season point total to 108.
Pal had one assist to go with three goals. She finished her freshman campaign with 47 goals and 37 assists. Lopez and Tatiana Smeltzer also had assists in the match.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"From August to today, we've made huge strides as a program and as a team. Hats off to UC Irvine, that's definitely one of the top teams in the country. I'm proud of the effort, intensity and fight our group played with today. Minus a few mistakes, we stuck to our game plan and executed very well. Overall, we leave here pleased with the improvement but disappointed with the loss. Can't wait to get started again next year."
SEASON WRAP UP
After taking the entire 2021 season off due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Matadors finished their 20th season of competition with a 12-14 overall record. CSUN notched two top-25 wins during the season while playing in 14 games decided by three goals or fewer. The team finished the regular season once again ranked in the top-25 nationally with a No. 24 ranking. The 2022 season saw the debut of a host new faces on the team with 13 players competing in their first collegiate water polo season.
