4/5/2022 7:40:00 PM | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES—CSUN battled No. 21 USC as the Trojans defeated the Matadors 4-0 in women's tennis action Tuesday afternoon at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
In doubles, Sasha Turchak and Ekaterina Repina led Grace Piper and Naomi Cheong 5-4 before play stopped due to the USC pair retiring. As a result, this gave the Matadors a point.
Eryn Cayetano and Salma Ewing defeated Jolene Coetzee and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso 6-1 at No. 1. Jenna Dorian and Victoria Santibañez Luna battled Gabrielle Lee and Isabelle Lee at No. 3 doubles before the USC pair took the victory 6-4 to secure the team point for the Trojans.
Cheong, ranked 78th in the current ITA poll, defeated Fraile Toboso 6-0, 6-2 to begin singles play at No. 2. Gabrielle Lee defeated Jasmine Tolmoyan 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 to earn USC's (14-10) second win. Cayetano, who is sixth in the current ITA rankings, defeated Repina 6-3, 6-1.
CSUN was in contention in the three remaining matches before play concluded. Turchak led 4-1 in the second set after dropping the first to Danielle Wilson 7-5. It was a similar story at No. 4, where Dorian led 2-0 in the second set when play ended. In the opening set, Dorian dropped a 7-5 decision to McKenna Koenig. Santibañez Luna also led 2-0 in the second set during the No. 5 match after losing 7-5 to Isabelle Lee in the first set.
"Doubles with Kat started strong," Turchak said. "We were up 5-4 until they retired. I lost the first set in singles, but it was very close. After that, I figured out her game and was up 4-1 in the second until they clinched. Our energy was great, and we put up a great fight."
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GARY VICTOR
"We had our chances for the doubles point after Kat and Sasha's win. Vika (Victoria) and Jenna were leading 4-2. USC won the big points; credit to them. We had some great points throughout in singles. I am proud of the effort."
