NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Cal State Fullerton needed extra innings to defeat CSUN to open a Big West softball doubleheader before handing the Matadors the first loss by more than two runs in the nightcap Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond.
GAME 1
The Titans defeated the Matadors 6-4 in nine innings to begin the day. Taking advantage of a CSUN error, Daisy Munoz broke the seal with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first that plated Megan Delgadillo. Two Matador errors resulted in two runs for Cal State Fullerton in the second.
A Titans' error led to the first Matador run in the bottom of the second before Mikayla Carman's fielder's choice drove in Kaylee Escutia for the second CSUN run. The Matadors tied the game in the third when Jaymi Steward led off the inning with her fifth home run.
In the top of the fifth, Munoz's RBI single drove in Hannah Becerra to return the lead to Cal State Fullerton. Then, in the sixth inning, an Alexia Silvas pitch hit Vinessa Nunez with two outs. Mia Stankiewicz doubled to score Nunez to tie the game.
With one out in the top of the ninth, Megan Delgadillo singled. She stole second. Becerra reached on a fielder's choice when CSUN starter Alexis Martinez tried to throw out Delgadillo at third. Delgadillo slid safely into third to give Cal State Fullerton runners on the corners. Alyssa Hernandez's sacrifice fly to right drove in Delgadillo for the go-ahead run. Munoz doubled to right to drive in Becerra for an insurance run. Myka Sutherlin, the third Titans' pitcher of the game, tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to earn Cal State Fullerton the victory.
Munoz was 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Titans. Becerra went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The three Cal State Fullerton pitchers limited CSUN to six hits. Stankiewicz was 2-for-3 to lead the Matadors.
