DAVIS, Calif.—CSUN swept a Big West Conference softball doubleheader from UC Davis Friday afternoon at La Rue Field.
GAME 1
Alexis Lemus' three-run home run in the top of the third proved to be the difference as the Matadors defeated the Aggies 3-1 in the opener.
The CSUN defense threw out two runners at home in the bottom of the second. Libbie McMahan walked to lead off the inning. Delaney Diaz doubled McMahan to third. She attempted to score but was thrown out 7-6-2 for the first out.
A Matadors' error resulted in runners on the corners for the Aggies. Bella Pahulu's grounder to short was fielded by Aaliyah Swan, who threw home where Kennedi Sorensen tagged out Diaz. Alyssa Ito popped out to end the inning.
With one out in the third, Swan walked. Mikayla Carman recorded the first CSUN hit, a single, to advance to third. Carman took second on the throw. This set the stage for Lemus, who smacked her first home run of the season for what proved to be the game-winning runs.
McMahan's two-out single in the bottom of the third scored Anna Dethlefson for UC Davis' first tally.
Kaylee Escutia doubled to begin the CSUN fourth. Vinessa Nunez successfully sacrificed her to third. Next, Alexa Landeros singled to center, but Escutia was thrown out at home trying to score. Landeros advanced to second on a throw where she was stranded as Sydney Freijanes flew out to center for the final out.
CSUN starter Kenedee Jamerson retired eight of the last nine Aggies she faced heading into the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Sarah Nakahara doubled to left. Dethlefson flew out to right for the final out of the game.
Jamerson needed only 78 pitches to record her eighth complete game. She tossed a four-hitter, striking out two, and walking two. Jamerson got 11 ground ball-outs. UC Davis starter Kenedi Brown also threw a four-hitter. She struck out four for the Aggies.
GAME 2
A five-run seventh inning helped propel CSUN to a 7-2 victory over UC Davis in the nightcap.
Escutia's two-out RBI double in the top of the first plated Jaymi Steward to give the Matadors an early advantage. The Aggies put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the first. However, CSUN starter Alexis Martinez quickly registered the next two outs to keep UC Davis at bay.
Landeros led off the CSUN second with a single. Freijanes' sacrifice bunt advanced Landeros to second. However, Landeros remained in scoring position. Aggies' starter Taylor Fitzgerald got Swan to line out to left before Carman grounded out too short to conclude the frame.
Steward hit her team-leading sixth home run, an opposite-field blast down the left field line, with one out in the top of the third for a 2-0 CSUN lead. Sorensen and Escutia followed with back-to-back singles; both took an extra base on the UC Davis throw during the play. Nunez would pop out before Landeros grounded out too short for the final out.
Reese Mattley and Diaz recorded back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Pahulu grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to wrap up matters. Steward was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the fifth. Sorensen reached on a fielder's choice as Fitzgerald tried to throw out Steward at second. The throw was wide, allowing both runners to reach safely. Escutia grounded into a 6-3 double play to keep the score 2-0.
Martinez allowed a leadoff single to McMahan before walking Mattley. Allie Gardiner entered the game, relieving Martinez. Diaz was Gardiner's first batter, and she popped out. A 3-2 Gardiner pitch hit Pahulu to load the bases. Kilday ran the count to 3-2 before popping out. Nakahara worked the count to 3-2 before striking out, looking for the third out.
Carman singled with one out in the seventh. She advanced to second when Lemus reached on an error. Steward singled to load the bases. A 2-0 Fitzgerald pitch hit Sorensen to score Carman. Escutia singled up the middle to drive in Steward and pinch-runner Samantha Kwiatkowski for a 5-0 score.
Sarah Reineman relieved Fitzgerald. Reineman gave up an RBI single to pinch-hitter Kylie Galindo which drove in Sorensen. Landeros picked up an RBI when she grounded out to third as Escutia came home. Mattley and Diaz recorded RBI singles with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to break the shutout.
Steward went 3-for-3. She scored three times and drove in a run. Escutia was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Kisling, Mattley, and Diaz all charted two hits. Martinez earned the victory in the circle, her seventh of the year (7-10). Gardiner posted her third save of the season.
