CSUN Offense Breaks Out in 14-2 Win Over Hawai'i
5/13/2022 1:29:00 AM | Baseball
HONOLULU---CSUN Baseball (27-19, 15-10 Big West) racked up 17 hits in a 14-2 victory over Hawai'i (22-21, 13-9 Big West) on Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium. Andrew Sojka went 2-for-5 with three runs, four RBI and a home run while Bart West had a 3-for-5 night with an RBI. Blaine Traxel worked eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits to go with five strikeouts for his sixth win of the season.
Â
The Matadors were held to just one hit through the first two innings by Hawai'i starter Cade Halemanu before Sojka broke up a scoreless tie in the third with a two-run homer.
Â
Traxel would have to work with a slim 2-0 lead for most of his eight innings on the mound and managed to keep the bats at bay. Hawai'i had two runners reach in the first inning against Traxel but the senior right-hander retired Bronson Rivera for the third out. After picking up an inning-ending double play in the second inning, Traxel faced the minimum over the next two frames. In the fifth, the Rainbow Warriors collected back-to-back singles with two outs before Traxel retired Cole Cabrera on a check-swing third strike.
CSUN had just three hits over the first five innings but would break out for 14 over the last four innings to open up a huge lead for Traxel.
In the sixth, the Matadors had two runners on base with two outs when West stroked an RBI double to center field. Gabe Gonzalez, who singled earlier in the inning, would also score on a wild pitch for a 4-0 CSUN lead.
CSUN though was far from done on the offensive side of things. The Matadors batted around in the top of the seventh in a four-run frame. Sojka added to his RBI total with a run-scoring single in the seventh before Gonzalez drove in two more runs with a double in the gap in right-center field. Jakob Simons made it an 8-0 game with an RBI single with two outs.
The ninth inning saw the Matadors send 12 more batters to the plate. After the first two batters reached to start the frame, Nathan Barraza hit an RBI single. Two batters later, Sebastian Garcia stroked an RBI single for CSUN's 10th run of the night. Mason Le checked in with a pinch-hit RBI single then Sojka drove in his fourth run with a fielder's choice. Ali Camarillo added to the hit column with another RBI single before CSUN closed its scoring output when Sojka scored on a wild pitch.
Meanwhile, Traxel cruised into the eighth inning with a shutout still intact. However, Hawai'i capitalized on two walks, a hit batter and an error on a potential inning-ending double play to score two runs. Traxel would close his stint on the mound by retiring Matt Wong on a flyout for the final out of the eighth.
Chad Wilson finished off the game with a shutout bottom of the ninth inning for a CSUN double-digit victory.
Â
GAME NOTES
Traxel surpassed 200 career strikeouts in the game, moving into sole possession of 10th place on CSUN's all-time career strikeout list. The right-hander now stands at 201 strikeouts in his four seasons with the Matadors. Traxel also won his 14th career game.
Â
CSUN's 17 hits tied a season-high while the Matadors' 14 runs were the second-most runs scored this season. Six Matadors had multiple-hit games on the night, which include West, Sojka, Camarillo, Gonzalez, Brandon Bohning and Kai Moody. Batters one through five in the lineup had 11 of the team's 17 hits.
Sojka, who reached base three times, extended his on-base streak to 29 games.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Tonight was a good night overall for our guys. Anytime you bring a team to Hawai'i, it presents many concerns and distractions for obvious reasons. I thought our guys handled it well in game one. The top of our order produced in a big way, which always makes the offense much easier. I believe our top five hitters collected 11 hits between them. Then from the mound, Blaine Traxel, even with more walks than we are used to from him, was in control for the majority of the night. His pitch count got elevated with the long eighth inning so he couldn't complete the game.Â
"Our guys know this is a big series for us in the standings. We'll enjoy Hawai'i but also come to play again tomorrow."
