Matadors Drop 3-0 Decision at Hawai'i
5/14/2022 1:43:00 AM | Baseball
HONOLULU---CSUN Baseball (27-20, 15-11 Big West) dropped a 3-0 decision to Hawai'i (23-21, 14-9 Big West) on Friday at Les Murakami Stadium. The Matadors had nine hits but left 11 runners on base for the night. Lucas Braun tossed 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits to go with nine strikeouts.
Â
A day after CSUN pounded out 14 runs, the Matadors were blanked for just the second time this season.
Â
CSUN could not solve Hawai'i starter Blaze Koali'i Pontes who tossed 6.2 shutout innings on Friday. The Matadors would have their best opportunities to score in the first two innings but could not come away with key hits with runners in scoring position.
Â
In the top of the first, Ali Camarillo singled with one out before Kai Moody doubled to put runners at second and third base. Pontes though struck out the next two batters. CSUN also left runners at the corners in the second inning.
Â
After giving up a two-out hit to Brandon Bohning, Pontes went on to retire 11 consecutive Matador batters.
Â
On the flip side, Braun kept the Hawai'i bats at bay through the first four innings. Braun would strand a runner at third base in the first inning before picking up a 6-4-3 double play in the second. The right-hander also escaped a bases loaded situation in the fourth by striking out Jacob Igawa.
Â
Braun again flirted with danger in the fifth inning when Hawai'i loaded the bases on two walks and a single, but he would not be able to escape the jam unscathed. After striking out Bronson Rivera, Braun gave up a two-run double to Kyson Donahue to break the scoreless tie.
Â
Hawai'i added to its lead in the sixth on a solo home run from Igawa for a 3-0 advantage.
Â
The Matadors had scoring opportunities in each of the last three innings, but could not come away with the timely hit against Hawai'i pitching.
Â
In the seventh, CSUN had runners at first and second base with two outs before Andrew Sojka went down on strikes. The Matadors collected singles from Camarillo and Kevin Fitzer in the eighth, but Joey Kramer grounded out for the third out.
Â
The Matadors threatened one last time in the bottom of the ninth when the first two batters reached. However, right-handed pitcher Dalton Penne retired the next three CSUN batters to end the game.
Â
GAME NOTES
CSUN relievers Xavier Martinez and Blake Sodersten combined to toss the final 2.2 innings, allowing no hits.
Four Matadors had multiple-hit games on the night. Moody doubled twice in the game while Camarillo, Bohning and Luke Powell also had two hits apiece. Sojka saw his 29-game on-base streak snapped.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Tonight was tough on us. Their pitcher was pretty good and I felt we never made an adjustment to what he was doing to us. I felt we strung some quality at-bats together early and late but we couldn't sustain anything to push a run across. From the mound, Lucas battled but they got the big hits off him when it mattered and we couldn't recover from it. We now have a day off due to their graduation on campus Saturday then we have a chance to win the series on Sunday."
UP NEXT
CSUN and Hawai'i will play the rubber match of their series on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. PT/1:05 p.m. HT.
