CSUN Falls to Hawai’i in Series Finale
5/15/2022 7:37:00 PM | Baseball
HONOLULU---CSUN Baseball (27-21, 15-12 Big West) dropped the rubber match of its weekend series at Hawai'i (24-21, 15-9 Big West), 10-1, on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium. Brandon Bohning reached base three times and tallied two of his team's four hits. Five Matador pitchers saw action on the mound led by Blaine Traxel who tossed three innings out of the bullpen.
The Rainbow Warriors would jump on the Matadors with a two-out rally in the first inning for three runs and never looked back on Sunday.
In the first inning, Kyson Donahue hit a two-out RBI double to bring home Cole Cabrera for the game's first run. From there, Matt Wong added to the lead with an RBI single before Jacob Igawa reached on an error at third base that scored Wong for a 3-0 lead.
The Bows added to their lead in the third inning as back-to-back singles would later result in two more runs. Wong reached on another CSUN error, this time in right field, that plated Stone Miayo. Hawai'i made it a 5-0 game on a Bronson Rivera RBI groundout.
CSUN had early opportunities to cut into the Hawai'i lead but would be turned away each time. In the second, Kevin Fitzer walked and Shunsuke Sakaino singled, but both were later stranded. The Matadors had runners at first and second base with one out in the third before Kai Moody hit into a unique double play where he grounded out and interference was called for the third out.
Hawai'i would break the game open over the middle innings. Wong, Igawa and Nainoa Cardinez registered RBI hits in a three-run fifth inning. In the sixth, Rivera collected a two-run single, again with two outs, to give Hawai'i 10 runs on the day.
The Matadors were held to one hit through the first six innings. CSUN though pushed across its lone run in the sixth, albeit without a hit. After Ali Camarillo was hit by a pitch, he later advanced to third base with less than two outs. Bart West then brought Camarillo home on an RBI groundout.
CSUN would leave the bases loaded in the seventh inning and strand two more runners in scoring position in the top of the ninth.
GAME NOTES
Diego Gutierrez started the game and pitched one inning before Traxel took over in the second inning. Traxel would go on to throw three innings, allowing two runs and one unearned run. Chad Wilson worked a single frame in the fifth, yielding three runs. Blake Sodersten worked two innings, allowing two runs and Blake Schriever pitched a shutout eighth.
Traxel moved into sole possession of ninth place on CSUN's career games pitches list with his 73rd appearance, ahead of Mike Frick (1999-01). The right-hander also pushed his career strikeout total to 203, putting him two strikeouts away from Erasmo Ramirez (1995-97) for ninth place on the all-time CSUN strikeout list.
Dalton Renne was credited with the win for Hawai'i as he worked 2.1 innings out of the bullpen and allowed no hits.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Very disappointing way to finish off the weekend. I felt we got beat in all phases of the game. I don't want to take any credit away from Hawai'i and their baseball team. We beat them pretty good in game one and they handed it to us pretty well the next two games. Now our guys need to focus on their upcoming finals and we need to get ready for our next series too."
UP NEXT
CSUN takes a week off from Big West competition and will head to Saint Mary's for a three-game series starting Thursday, May 19 at 3 p.m.
