CSUN Closes Non-Conference Slate at Saint Mary's

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (27-21, 15-12 Big West) takes a week off from Big West play with its final non-conference series of the season at Saint Mary's. The series starts Thursday at 3 p.m. before concluding on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. All three games will be streamed on WCCSports.com.

In a series that dates back to 1969, CSUN and Saint Mary's have played 19 all-time games in baseball with the Matadors holding an 11-8 edge. The teams though have not played since the 2017 season when Saint Mary's took three of four games at Matador Field. The teams split a four-game series in Moraga in 2015. CSUN is 4-4 all-time against Saint Mary's on the road.
The Matadors are coming off a series loss at Hawai'i last weekend, which halted CSUN's series win streak at four. CSUN tied a season-high in hits with 17 in a series-opening 14-2 win over Hawai'i. The Matadors scored 12 of their 14 runs over the last four innings to break open a 2-0 game. The Bows would even the series in game two, blanking the Matadors 3-0 before handing CSUN a 10-1 defeat.
Blaine Traxel earned his sixth win of the season last Thursday against Hawai'i after working eight innings and allowing two runs. Traxel also surpassed 200 career strikeouts in the game, becoming the 10th Matador in team history to reach that milestone. Andrew Sojka drove in four runs and homered in the game one win while Brandon Bohning had three two-hit games in the series.
In the Matador record book, Traxel can move into ninth place on the all-time career strikeout list, currently occupied by former Major Leaguer Erasmo Ramirez (1995-97), with two more strikeouts. Traxel, who has 203 career strikeouts, ranks ninth all-time in CSUN history in games pitched with 73.
As a team, the Matadors rank third in the Big West in ERA (4.20), home runs (41) and stolen bases (46) while they are fourth in slugging percentage (.403). Sojka is third in the conference in runs (43), fifth in hits (64) and ninth in batting average (.339) heading into the week while Bart West is up to seventh in the Big West in batting (.341) and slugging percentage (.547), eighth in home runs (8) and 10th in hits (58). Gabe Gonzalez sits in fourth place in home runs with 10. On the pitching side, Traxel is second in the league in innings pitched (88.0), fifth in strikeouts (75) and wins (6) and ninth in ERA (3.38). Lucas Braun is sixth in the conference in ERA at a 3.23 clip.
After this week's games, the Matadors will wrap up the 2022 regular season with a Big West series against UC San Diego from May 26-28 at Matador Field. On the final day of the regular season on Saturday, May 28, the Matadors will honor the careers of their senior class as well as celebrate the retiring Dave Serrano who will coach the final game of his 34-year career.
A Closer Look at Saint Mary's
The Gaels are 25-27 overall this season and 9-18 in West Coast Conference play. The team is coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of Portland last weekend. Saint Mary's though swept its last series at home against San Francisco and has won 14 of 22 games overall at Louis Guisto Field. Head coach Greg Moore is in his third season leading the Gaels. Moore previously spent six seasons as the head coach of the Matadors from 2014-19.
Nathan Chong leads the Gaels in batting at a .323 clip with three homers and 20 RBI. Gavin Napier tops the squad with 38 runs scored to go with 47 hits, 25 RBI, two homers and a .290 batting average. Chris Santiago is the team's top run producer with 10 home runs and 29 RBI while he bats .269 at the plate. Right-handed pitcher Conner Roberts, who is scheduled to start game two of Friday's doubleheader, has a team-high 65 strikeouts in 61.0 innings to go with a 3-2 record and 3.84 ERA.
