CSUN Finishes Third at Big West Championship, Best Finish Since 2017

LA QUINTA, Calif. - The CSUN Men's Golf team posted a final round four-over 292 on Tuesday but the Matadors were not able to move up from a third place finish at the conclusion of the Big West Men's Golf Championship at La Quinta Country Club.
With team scores of 297-285-292, CSUN finishes the championship at (+10) 874 which is the Matadors' best three-round total at the conference championship since 2017. CSUN's third-place finish is also its best team finish since taking second also in 2017.
UC Davis led from start to finish as the Aggies finished at 11-under 853 to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. Thomas Hutchison of UC Davis won the individual championship at 13-under 203.
The Matadors opened the final round with three players in the top-11 and finished with two players in the top-15. A final round two-under 70 gave Felix Schrott his third top-five finish of the season as he tied for fourth at one-under 215. In posting CSUN's low score of the championship, Schrott had an eagle three at the par-5 13th to get as low as three-under in the final round. Schrott was still three-under heading to his final hole where a bogey five left him at two-under 70.
Paul-Louis Gachet, who posted an impressive four-under 68 on Monday to move into a tie for third, closed with a six-over 78 to slip into a tie for 15th at four-over 220. Gachet was one-under through seven before a pair of double bogeys and a bogey over his next three holes dropped him to four-over.Â

COACH JIM BRACKEN SAID
"Although we had hoped to possibly move into second today, we were seeded sixth so we're not disappointed with a third place finish. We had it going for a time today but just didn't finish strong. Overall it was a good year; we overcame some injuries and still won two tournaments and finished third at the conference championship. I think it showed the depth this team has and we're looking forward to carrying that into next year."

- Also for the Matadors, Eirik Thomassen narrowly missed a top-20 finish as a final round five-over 77 dropped him from 11th into a tie for 21st at six-over 222.
- Nick Fowlkes matched for the team-high with four birdies in posting his best round of the championship on Tuesday, Fowlkes had three birdies on the front nine and made the turn at two-under. His lone double bogey to open the back nine dropped him to even-par before finishing one-over the rest of the way to tie for 24th at seven-over 223.
- Thomas Burou had three birdies for the second straight round and finished the day at even-par 72.
