CSUN Slips to 10th at Big West Men's Golf Championship

LA QUINTA, Calif. - The CSUN Men's Golf team posted a 10-shot improvement from round one to round two but slipped into 10th place after the second round of the Big West Championship on Monday at La Quinta Country Club.
After opening with a team score of 310 on Sunday, the Matadors came in at 300 on Monday to post a two-day total of 610. Round one leaders Long Beach State (548) carded an 18-under 270 in the second round to extend its lead to a staggering 28 shots over Cal Poly (574) and Hawai'i (574) heading into Tuesday's final round. The Beach's Steen Zeman (133, -11) also continues to hold the individual lead after following a 5-under 67 in round one with a 6-under 66 in round two.Â
Individually, sophomore Tavin Boman had CSUN's low round of the day (-1, 71) to move up 12 spots into a tie for 33rd at 7-over 151. Boman had two birdies and one bogey on the front nine to make the turn at 1-under. One eagle and three bogeys on his first six holes of the back nine dropped to even-par on the day before a birdie on his final hole closed out a 1-under 71.

"Our goal tomorrow is to play as well as we're capable of playing in one round at this championship. No excuses, it's just been a combination of poor execution and poor golf, not much more to say. Unfortunately, we're playing our worst golf of the year right now, so we'll see if we can bounce back tomorrow and close out the tournament on a positive note."

CSUN will be paired with UC Riverside for Tuesday's final round, which gets underway off the No. 10 tee with Jonke leading the Matadors off at 8:50 a.m.

- Junior Ethan Posthumus, who was the low Matador after round one (tied for 22nd), slipped into a tie for 38th at 8-over 152. Posthumus opened the day with birdies on three of his first five holes to get to 2-under. He would finish 8-over on his final 13 holes to close out a round of 6-over 78.
- Senior Domenic De Luca dropped into a tie for 43rd at 10-over 154 following a 6-over 78 in round two. De Luca had a pair of birdies along with four bogeys and a pair of double bogeys in the second round.
- Sophomore Bryson Barnes is a shot behind De Luca in 45th place at 11-over 155. After an opening round 80, Barnes had two birdies and 11 pars in a 3-over 75 on Monday.
- Junior Dillon Jonke, who subbed in for fellow junior Liam Judkins, had a pair of birdies and 12 pars to post a round of 4-over 76.
