Braun Strikes Out 12, CSUN Clinches Series with UC Davis
5/7/2022 5:21:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Right-handed pitcher Lucas Braun struck out a career-high 12 batters over seven shutout innings as CSUN (25-19, 13-10 Big West) clinched a series win with a 6-1 victory over UC Davis (4-26, 3-17 Big West) on Saturday at Matador Field. Bart West finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Andrew Sojka finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Braun limited the Aggies to four hits and struck out at least one batter in each inning he pitched.
Braun set the tone early for the Matadors, striking out five of the first six batters to start the game. After giving up a two-out single in the first, Braun retired eight-straight Aggies. In the fourth, UC Davis threatened with a pair of singles but Braun would strike out Kyler Arenado to end the inning.
CSUN gave Braun early run support with single tallies in the first and second innings. In the home half of the first, Kai Moody walked with two outs before stealing second base. Gabe Gonzalez would deliver an RBI single up the middle for the Matadors' first run. An inning later, the Matadors scored without the benefit of a hit as Brandon Bohning hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Drew Porter who reached on an error to start the frame.
The Matadors added to their lead with a run in the third on an RBI groundout from Porter. In the fifth, CSUN nearly hit for the cycle as Ali Camarillo singled, Moody hit an RBI triple and West roped an RBI double down the left-field line. Joey Kramer made it a 6-0 game on a sacrifice fly for CSUN's third run of the fifth inning.
The run support was more than enough for Braun who continued to frustrate the Aggie batters. Braun struck out two more in the fifth and another in the sixth before working out of trouble in the seventh. The Aggies had runners at the corners with two outs before Braun fanned Riley Acosta, his last batter of the game, for the third out.
UC Davis would not go away quietly though over the last two innings. In the eighth, the Aggies took advantage of an error on a potential pickoff at first base to eventually score their first run. Jonah Henrickson came away with a two-out RBI single to plate Mark Wolbert.
In the top of the ninth, the Aggies loaded the bases with one out against Xavier Martinez. With the tying run on deck, Blake Schriever would finally shut the door on any potential UC Davis rally by retiring J.D. Mico and James Williams III on flyouts.
GAME NOTES
Braun is the first Matador to strike out at least 12 batters in a game since Kenny Rosenberg fanned 12 on May 21, 2016, at Purdue. Braun improved to 5-0 as a starter this season. Schriever recorded his 22nd career save in his 90th appearance with the Matadors.
Sojka reached base three times, extending his on-base streak to 27 games. He also posted his 18th multiple-hit game of the season.
The Matadors notched their sixth series win in eight weeks of Big West play.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"It's always big to win the series. I'm proud that we've won six of eight in conference. That's how college baseball is set up, you win series. We've learned how to do that. Lucas Braun has continued to get better every weekend. He's given us a solid seven innings. The only reason I took him out was because we play a day earlier next week and we have a rested bullpen. He was close to the century mark so it was the right time to get him out. When he is throwing his mixture of three or four pitches, all for strikes, he's very tough to hit. I'm very proud of what he's done. He's help solidy the starting rotation with the amount of quality innings he's given us.
"Our theme as a coaching staff is to keep getting better as a team. There were some things talked about from the offensive side. Some bad base running mistakes, we continued to do that. We work on that a ton. Those are all instinct things. Our guys are obviously not playing it out in practice where it's hurting us in the game. Bart West had a good day for us today. I think Kai Moody set the momentum early by getting to second base and scoring on a base hit. Little things like that are big things."
