Matadors Complete Sweep of UC Davis on Mother's Day

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (26-19, 14-10 Big West) completed a three-game sweep of UC Davis (4-27, 3-18 Big West) with a 4-1 win on Mother's Day on Sunday afternoon at Matador Field. Diego Gutierrez worked five innings, allowing a run on five hits to earn his second win of the season. Ali Camarillo finished 2-for-4 with an RBI while Bart West and Kai Moody homered. Blake Sodersten worked the final four innings, allowing one hit for his first career save.
The Aggies cracked the scoring column first in the opening half-inning against Gutierrez. Mark Wolbert singled to start the game before reaching second base on a Gutierrez throwing error. James Williams III followed with an RBI single to give the Aggies their first lead of the series at 1-0. Gutierrez surrendered a walk and a two-out single to Raul Sandoval but Bart West made a strong throw home from left field to get Williams III at the plate. Moments later, Gutierrez picked up a key strikeout of Omar Plascencia for the final out to limit the damage.
CSUN answered quickly in the bottom of the first, racking up four hits in a three-run frame. Andrew Sojka doubled to start the inning before scoring on an RBI single from Camarillo to tie up the game at 1-1. After the next two Matadors were retired, West stepped to the plate and belted a two-run homer to left field to give CSUN the lead.
The Matadors added another run in the bottom of the third when Moody hammered a solo home run to left to make it a 4-1 game.
Gutierrez settled in on the mound after a rocky first inning to throw four-straight shutout frames. Following Sandoval's single in the first inning, Gutierrez went on to retire the next 11 batters in a row until a one-out hit by J.D. Mico in the fifth. In that inning, the Aggies loaded the bases with two outs, but Gutierrez forced Nick Leehey to hit into an inning-ending forceout at second base to keep the Matadors' lead intact.
In the sixth, Sodersten took over the mound and continued to keep the Aggies at bay. Sodersten pitched around a two-out walk in the sixth and a two-out double in the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth, UC Davis had its first leadoff batter reach since the first inning d when Plascencia walked, but Sodersten induced a double play on the next pitch. Sodersten would strike out Mico for the third out to secure the save.Â
GAME NOTES
Sojka's double in the first inning extended his on-base streak to 28 games. West homered for the eighth time this season while Moody picked up his fifth home run on the year. CSUN outscored UC Davis 19-3 over the three-game series.
The mothers of players from both teams were invited to stand on the field for the national anthem in honor of Mother's Day.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I felt this weekend was about pitching. I'm proud of how the staff is developing. Diego, in his first inning scuffled a little bit, but I'm proud of him. That was a good one [he allowed], it was a huge deal for us. It minimized them to one run and we come back to put three on the board. Probably the most imporant inning, he went out and got the shutdown inning, which is huge when you take the lead from somebody. There are some things we need to fix offensively. We've become one dimensional and we're not making adjustments in the batter's box. I thought UC Davis did a good job. I knew their record coming in here and they played hard. They gave us everything we could take.
"It means everything to me [to celebrate the mothers in attendance]. I live vicariously through our players. I lost my mother 20 years ago. I've learned through my mentor George Horton, he made it special on Mother's Day. I've carried the torch for him. They're everything to us. Like I told the team before the game, today we play for someone bigger than ourselves. The person that did our wash for us, took us to our Little League games, supported us in high school or wherever we came from to get wherever we're at. I want our players to realize that their moms should be the most important person in their life. They should be celebrated. We play this game hard for the sake of the love they've given us throughout their lives of raising us."
