NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – CSUN's Director of Women's Volleyball John Price has officially announced the release of the Matadors' 2022 schedule.
CSUN's 32-match regular-season schedule features 12 non-conference tournament matches against teams from eight different conferences before the Big West season gets underway Sept. 23 at UC Irvine.
"Last year, we had an unbelievably tough non-conference schedule due to COVID and travel so in that regard this is a much better schedule for us," said Price. "Obviously we want to get off to a good start and establish some positive momentum going into the final weekend of the non-conference schedule and then into the start of the Big West season."
CSUN opens the season Aug. 26 at the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Matadors will take on Drake in the season opener before meeting host Air Force and Texas A&M-Commerce on Aug. 27.
CSUN opens September in the Pacific Northwest as the Matadors will meet Nevada, Idaho State and host Gonzaga over two days (Sept. 2-3) in Spokane, Wash. The following weekend, CSUN travels to the Bay Area to take on Penn in Moraga and the USF Dons in San Francisco (Sept. 9). The Matadors return to Moraga on Sept. 10 to take on Saint Mary's for the first time since 2017.
The Matadors conclude the non-conference slate with three matches at the Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. as the Matadors face UTEP and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 16 followed by their final non-conference match against host Arizona on Sept. 17.
The 20-match Big West Conference schedule opens with a two-match road trip (Sept. 23-24) as CSUN travels to UC Irvine and UC San Diego during the conference-opening weekend. The Matadors will host CSU Bakersfield in their home opener on Sept. 30 to close the month.
October opens with CSUN hosting Cal Poly on Oct. 1 before the Matadors travel to Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 7) and Long Beach State (Oct. 8). CSUN opens its longest homestand of the season on Oct. 14 against UC Davis as the Matadors also welcome UC Riverside (Oct. 15) and UC Santa Barbara (Oct. 18) to Premier America Credit Union Arena. CSUN travels to defending conference champions Hawai'i on Oct. 21 before closing the month with home matches against UC San Diego (Oct. 28) and UC Irvine (Oct. 29).
The final month of the regular season has the Matadors on the road for five of their final eight matches. CSUN travels to Cal Poly (Nov. 4) and CSU Bakersfield (Nov. 5) before hosting Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton for a two-match homestand on Nov. 11-12. A three-match road trip to UC Riverside (Nov. 17), UC Davis (Nov. 19) and UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 22) follows before CSUN caps the regular season at home against Hawai'i on Nov. 26.
"The Big West is going to be much improved this season, especially the top-four teams," said Price. "We were competitive against the conference teams last season, including taking Hawai'i to four sets on the road, and I expect us to be very competitive again this season."
