NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer's Cindy Arteaga earned her first career Big West Offensive Player of the Week award on Monday, the league office announced. Arteaga recorded eight points and scored in each of the Matadors' three matches in last week's action.
Originally from Santa Rosa, Calif., Arteaga scored all four of CSUN's goals last week while racking up 20 shots with 11 on goal. She recorded her first career brace while also notching her first career game-winning goal.Â
"Really happy for Cindy, she has been playing really well and excited that she is being recognized for her effort," said head coach Christine Johnson. "She is so talented, and I am confident she will continue to turn heads as the season progresses. Congratulations, Cindy, and thank you to my fellow coaches and the conference for her recognition, there are a lot of very talented players as I'm sure these weekly decisions are not easy."
Her offensive exploits began on Monday against UC Irvine when she scored on a penalty kick in the 90th minute. In a then season-high 84 minutes on the field, Arteaga had eight shots with four on goal in a 2-1 CSUN loss to UCI in a non-conference match.
Arteaga would hit a first-half goal at CSU Bakersfield on Thursday in CSUN's Big West opener. Playing all 90 minutes in the match, Arteaga scored off a pair of touch passes from Angelica Claiborne and Cassidy Imperial-Pham. On the play, Arteaga made a turn to get past her defender before scoring from atop the box straight away. The Matadors though were unable to hold on to the lead as the Roadrunners rode three second-half goals for a 3-1 triumph.
Arteaga would help the Matadors get back on the winning track against Portland State on Sunday. In the 45th minute, Arteaga benefited from a long pass from Kacie Garrity where she was able to break ahead of the pack. Arteaga would beat PSU's goalkeeper to the ball before sending in a rolling shot going to her right for the goal. In the second half, Arteaga completed the brace with another strike, a laser from the right side of the box, after a pass from Stevie Reynolds. CSUN would hold on for a 2-0 win and team's first shutout of the season.
A Preseason All-Big West selection, Arteaga is currently second in The Big West in goals with six and in third place in points with 12. She tops the Big West in shots (38) and shots on goal (18). Her six goals this season are already a career best.
Arteaga is the first Matador to earn a Big West Player of the Week award this season and the first CSUN player to win an Offensive Player of the Week accolade since Marissa Favela on Sept. 11, 2018.
The Matadors return to the pitch on Thursday night against Cal State Fullerton at Matador Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+ with Ghizal Hasan on the call.
