NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Down a player for over 40 minutes, CSUN held off UC Irvine to earn a scoreless draw on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Thrust into the game on a penalty kick situation, goalkeeper Kennedy Williams had six saves to ensure the shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UCI went on the attack in the early going, earning a shot attempt from Desiree Mendoza while also committing four offsides over the first 20 minutes. CSUN would get its best look of the first half in the 24th minute on a strike from Kacie Garrity on the left side of the box, but Glo Hinojosa dove to her right to make the save. On the flip side, Hayden Mauldin racked up three saves in the first half, including two over the last 10 minutes. CSUN also picked up a team save in the 45th minute when Kaylee Gutierrez stopped a shot from inside the six-yard box.Â
Out of intermission, CSUN would lose a player in the 49th minute. On the play, Mauldin attempted to clear the ball out but her kick was deflected. Mauldin attempted to get the ball but collided with Alyssa Moore. Mauldin would be shown the red card, forcing CSUN to play one player down and make a change at goalkeeper. Kennedy Williams was called upon to not only enter the match but face a penalty kick. UCI's Tati Fung took the penalty shot but her low attempt was stopped by Williams cleanly.
Â
Down the stretch, UCI played aggressively with a player advantage. Posting 12 shots after Williams entered the game, UCI would be unable to crack the CSUN defense. Williams notched three of her six saves over the final 10 minutes of action. CSUN had an opportunity to take the lead in the 87th minute when Cassidy Imperial-Pham forced a turnover on the UCI backline, but her shot would be saved by Hinojosa at the near post.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"I think we played really well. It was a pretty even match. It was unfortunate for Hayden to go out with the red card but Kennedy came up big time with the PK save to keep us alive. I think we did a really good job of staying organized and absorbing the attack and created a few opportunities as well. I was very pleased, and given that it was Senior Day, it's just that much more meaningful."
