CSUN Closes Season with Home Match vs. UC Riverside

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer wraps up the 2023 campaign with its season finale against UC Riverside on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Live stats will be provided for the match.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN was eliminated from Big West tournament contention last week. The Matadors dropped a high-scoring affair to UC San Diego 5-3 on Thursday, which mathematically eliminated them from the postseason race. CSUN would finish the week with a 0-0 draw against UC Irvine on Senior Day on Sunday.
In the road contest at UCSD, CSUN would dig a 4-0 deficit early in the second half before roaring back with three goals over a 13-minute span. Izabel Reyes put the Matadors on the scoreboard via a penalty kick in the 51st minute then added another on a deep shot from 25 yards in the 61st minute. Ashley Cruz brought CSUN to within 4-3 on a header in the 64th minute as well. However, the Tritons answered with another goal in the 66th minute and held on the rest of the way.
The Matadors would have an emotional Senior Day with UC Irvine. CSUN battled the defending Big West champions to a standstill for a half before goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin was whistled for a red card in the 49th minute. The call also resulted in a penalty kick for UCI as CSUN would be forced to play a player down and replace its goalkeeper. Kennedy Williams came off the bench, made an emphatic save of the penalty kick before finishing with six saves on the afternoon. Williams' appearance on Sunday was just her second appearance of the season.
SENIOR SALUTE
CSUN's six-member senior class of Kacie Garrity, Ashley Cruz, Izabel Reyes, Brooke Mobeck, Erin Anderson and Sami Alarcon will play their final games with CSUN on Thursday night versus UC Riverside. After last Sunday's match, each were honored for their respective accomplishments and contributions to the program. All six also made the start in the Senior Day matchup.
A defensive stalwart, Garrity has lettered four seasons with CSUN and played in the most matches of any current player with 75 to go with two goals, nine assists and 13 points. Cruz, who set a school record by returning for a seventh season, has played in 64 games and recorded seven goals, five assists and 19 points after missing her first two seasons with injury. Reyes has led the team with five goals and 12 points this season while competing in 50 total games and posting 14 points. Mobeck has played in 49 career games with CSUN, registering three goals and seven points. Anderson has seen action in 48 career games, posting one goal, two assists and four points while Sami Alarcon, who made her first appearance of 2023 last Sunday, has played in 28 games and scored once.
BIG WEST LEADERBOARDS
After picking up two goals last week, Izabel Reyes is up to sixth in The Big West in goals (5) and seventh in points (12). Kacie Garrity is also up to seventh place in the assist department (4) following a two-assist game last Thursday. In goal, Hayden Mauldin is second in the conference in saves (94), third in saves per game (5.22) and sixth in save percentage (.734) and shutouts (3).
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Hayden Mauldin has continued to climb CSUN's all-time top-10 leaderboards this season. Mauldin is now eighth in school history in career saves (149) while also ranking ninth in minutes in goal (2,517) and 10th in matches in goal (29). On the all-time season list, Mauldin's 94 saves this year are the fifth-most in a season in team history. Kacie Garrity is on the cusp of the top-10 career assist list as she enters her final CSUN game with nine assists, one helper shy of 10th place.
CAREER SEASONS
The 2023 season has seen a number of Matadors post career years on the pitch. On CSUN's senior class, Izabel Reyes has scored a career-high five goals, after previously never hitting the net. Reyes' 12 points are also a new personal best. Ashley Cruz has broken her career high in goals (3) and points (7) in her final CSUN campaign. Three other Matadors were first time goal scorers this year, which include juniors Kaylee Gutierrez and Ashly Torres and sophomore Yoshi Rubalcava. In goal, sophomore Hayden Mauldin set new career highs this year in both saves (94) and shutouts (3).
SCOUTING UC RIVERSIDE
The Highlanders come in with a 2-10-6 overall record and 2-5-2 conference mark. Similar to CSUN, UCR will wrap up its 2023 campaign on Thursday. After beginning The Big West season 2-0, UCR has gone winless over its last seven league matches. The Highlanders are seeking their first road win of the year as they enter with a 0-5-3 record. The duo of Spenser Gonzales and Braelynn Llamoca have scored a team-high three goals apiece on the year while Daphane Mendez has a team-best 10 points to go with two goals. Cassia Souza has played every minute in goal, posting a 1.83 goals-against-average with four shutouts and 96 saves.
CSUN leads UC Riverside 15-7 in the all-time series. The Matadors have won the last seven meetings in the series as well as the last seven matches played at Matador Soccer Field. In last season's meeting, CSUN posted a 4-2 victory in Riverside behind two goals from Cindy Arteaga.
