CSUN Tennis Earns Impressive Wins at ITA Southwest Regional

SAN DIEGO, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis wrapped up play at the ITA Southwest Regionals over the weekend in San Diego, highlighted by impressive victories and strong showings from multiple Matadors. The event was hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State.

DOUBLES
Two of CSUN's three teams competing in the round of 64 were victorious on Friday, Oct. 20.

The team of Cindy Ung and Vitoria Solis Urdiales knocked off Jenna Schlatter and Kayla Meraz of UC Irvine, 8-5. The Matadors also earned a double win from Yuliia Zhytelna and Angela Ho over UCI's Asha Gidwani and Amanda Perez, 4-1 (injury).

Two CSUN teams advanced to the round of 32 later in the day. Zhytelna and Ho would give Pepperdine's Nikki Redelijk and Anna Campana a battle before falling 8-4. Ung and Solis Urdiales were defeated by a team from San Diego State, 6-1.

CSUN wrapped up doubles play on Saturday with a victory over a team from the defending Big West champion Hawai'i. Zhytelna would team with Solis Urdiales for the impressive win over Nikola Homolkova and Nelly Knezkova, 7-5.

SINGLES
Angela Ho would give CSUN a memorable singles win on Thursday, Oct. 19 over USC's Gabrielle Lee (6-1, 6-0) in the round of 128. However, due to injury, Ho was unable to compete further in the tournament. Yuliia Zhytelna took Grace Gamal of UC San Diego to a third set before falling, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6.

On Friday, CSUN earned three singles victories as Zhytelna knocked off Rhona Cook of Long Beach State, 6-1, 1-6, 10-7. Sofia Dermenjyan would be successful over Cincy Chen of UC San Diego, 4-6, 6-1, 11-9. Emma Moratalla Sanz also gained a victory, knocking off the Tritons' Sophie Pearson, 6-2, 2-6, 12-10.

Singles action wrapped up on Saturday, Oct. 21 with two more CSUN wins. Vitoria Solis Urdiales beat Kaytlin Taylor of Cal State Fullerton, 3-6, 6-1, 10-5 while Dermenjyan would also win over Sydney Tran of UC Riverside, 6-0, 4-6, 11-9.

"Angela toughed out an injury that didn't allow her to use her left hand. She managed to compete well in singles and in doubles with Yuliia, pushing Pepperdine for much of the match.

Sofia won two matches when down match points. That should lift her confidence going forward. She is an exceptional teammate.
Â
Yuliia and Vito had an outstanding win over Hawai'i on day three. They both handled pressure and showed courage.
Â
Vito and Cindy played extremely cohesive and well-thought-out doubles. Vito finished with a very strong effort in singles and seems to be getting back to her game. She is a very talented player.

Talli and Emma had some good matches as they fought through injuries and illness. They were keys to our success last season."
