10/8/2023 4:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer fell to Long Beach State 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Ashley Cruz hit the lone Matador tally to give CSUN an early lead but the Beach scored three unanswered to take the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Long Beach State opened the game with a pair of shots on frame, the Matadors struck first in the 16th minute. On the play, Kacie Garrity set up the scoring opportunity with a drive down the left sideline. Her cross to the far post hit Ashley Cruz who headed in the ball for a CSUN 1-0 lead. However, the lead was short-lived as the Beach answered quickly in the 20th minute following a barrage of shot attempts. On a corner kick, Elysia Laramie sent in a shot from the far post that was saved by the CSUN defense. From there, Kassandra Ceja picked up the rebound and hit the post then Cherrie Cox cleaned up the play with a strike from less than six yards to even the game. Cruz nearly gave CSUN the lead right back less than two minutes on a similar play to her goal earlier in the half. The score though remained at 1-1 until the 45th minute when a counter attack led to Summer Laskey hitting the go-ahead goal.
Â
CSUN would gain a pair of scoring chances early in the second half including a Cruz shot that was stopped by the Beach's defense. The visitors collected a timely goal in the 59th minute to go in front by two. Laskey would set up the play with a cross to the middle where Cox netted her second goal of the day. Hayden Mauldin helped keep the Beach off the scoreboard the rest of the way, notching four of her eight saves over the final 30-plus minutes. CSUN's final shot of the game came in the 69th minute on a Brooke Mobeck shot that missed high.

NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"The devil is in the details. I think we were our own worst enemy today with not executing the small things and the things that we're really good at. Also, just turning off in the moment when we needed to stay turned on. I don't think it was a terrible performance from us but that's the story of our season. The score is not always reflected with how we play. Ultimately, it's a conference game and we knew what we needed to do going into it. It's just on us for not executing."
