#25 CSUN to Play Twice at Cal Lutheran on Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 25 CSUN Water Polo (3-3) returns to action on Saturday for a pair of matches at Cal Lutheran. The Matadors face the host Regals at 10 a.m. before taking on Concordia for the second time this season at 1 p.m. CSUN's match with Cal Lutheran will be streamed online via the SCIAC Network. Live stats will be provided for both contests.
LAST WEEK'S GAMES
The Matadors finished 1-3 at the competitive Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego last weekend. CSUN faced three nationally-ranked opponents and nearly came away with a split at the event. Third-ranked UCLA handed CSUN a 21-3 defeat in the opener last Friday while the Matadors would go 1-1 on Saturday, falling 15-6 to 12th-ranked UC Davis before defeating Concordia 11-10. CSUN nearly erased a four-goal deficit to No. 21 San Diego State on Sunday but would fall by a narrow 9-7 margin.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Dorottya Telek had another big weekend at the Triton Invitational as she surpassed 100 career goals. The Hungarian native scored 13 goals over the four matches to go with one steal, two field blocks and 15 exclusions drawn. In the win over Concordia, Telek would tie a school record for goals in a game with seven, previously achieved by Chari Christopher (2003), Whitney Delgado (2011), Lindsy Duncan (2013) and Madeleine Sanchez (2016). On the season, Telek has a team-high 24 goals on 47 shot attempts (51.1 percent) while she has notched 101 career tallies.
Anna Pal also had a quality weekend at the Triton Invite, scoring three goals to go with four assists. Tatiana Smeltzer, Tatum Scarry, Nicole Bacoyanis and Jessica Matkovich all had two goals apiece over the four contests. Nicole Thomas had one goal over the weekend but her score would prove to be a big one as it was the game winner against Concordia, which broke a 10-10 tie.
In net, Meghan Lopez played in all four matches last week, posting 25 combined saves. Lopez has registered 52 total saves on the season to go with a 10.86 goals-against-average.
SERIES HISTORY
The Matadors are 7-0 against Cal Lutheran in women's water polo with four of those wins taking place at Cal Lutheran. CSUN last played the Regals on Feb. 19, 2019, posting a 15-8 victory.
CSUN improved to 8-0 all time versus Concordia last Saturday with an 11-10 victory over the Golden Eagles at the Triton Invite. Six of the teams' eight meetings have been in neutral-site pools. The Matadors won by an 11-10 margin over the Eagles as well during the 2022 season.
A CLOSER LOOK AT CAL LUTHERAN
The Regals are opening their 2023 season on Saturday against the Matadors. In 2022, Cal Lutheran finished with a 16-11 overall record and 9-5 mark in the SCIAC. The team was ranked sixth in this week's national Division III poll. Cal Lutheran has returned three All-Americans in Kemi Dijkstra, Kaitlin Gardhouse and Izzy De Souza. Dijkstra netted 53 goals to go with 20 assists last season while Gardhouse had 18 goals and 38 assists. De Souza posted an 8.96 GAA with 247 saves in front of the cage in 2022.

The Golden Eagles have gone 1-5 on the season. CUI dropped four matches at the Triton Invite last weekend, falling to the likes of USC (23-3) , UC Santa Barbara (14-3) and LMU (15-9) in addition to a close loss to CSUN. In 2022, CUI finished with an overall 9-14 record and posted a top-20 win by defeating No. 20 Brown. Madison Ravelo, an All-American last season, scored a team-high 70 goals in 2022 while Tamsyn Evezard netted 46 goals.
