2/11/2023 5:00:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.---No. 25 CSUN Water Polo (5-3) picked up a pair of wins on Saturday at Samuelson Aquatics Center. CSUN knocked off Cal Lutheran in the morning game, 13-9, before defeating Concordia, 12-9, to wrap up the day. Dorottya Telek scored seven goals in the opener while Helena Sandhagen and Anna Pal had three goals apiece in leading CSUN to a 2-0 day. CSUN used three field players as goalkeepers in the two matches.
GAME 1 RECAP
The Matadors capitalized on an early exclusion to net their first goal courtesy of Shelby Hovanesian. After the Regals evened the match with 5:39 left in the first quarter, Anna Pal gave the Matadors the lead right back a minute later. Telek found the back of the net two times late in the first period to help keep the Matadors on top 4-3 after eight minutes. In the second period, Telek completed the hat trick near the five-minute mark before Hovanesian scored again for a three-goal lead. CSUN held Cal Lutheran scoreless in the second period as the half would conclude on a goal from Telek with one second left for a 7-3 lead.
In the third period, the Regals connected for the first two goals to pull to within two. Telek netted her fifth goal of the match with 2:45 left in the third while Tatum Scarry also got into the scoring column to keep the Matadors in front 9-6. Cal Lutheran though fought its way back, eventually pulling to within one. CSUN would have to withstand a Regal powerplay before picking up a timely goal from Scarry. Just 37 seconds later, Telek added to her scoring tally with her sixth goal then Sandhagen found the net to extend the lead to 12-8. Telek notched her seventh goal of the contest, helping secure a Matador victory.
Playing without starting goalkeeper Meghan Lopez, Tatiana Smeltzer started the match in goal and collected a save in 16 minutes while Kelsey Meyers finished the match in front of the cage and had two saves.
GAME 2 RECAP
CSUN held the Golden Eagles without a goal for the first five-plus minutes to start the game while Valeria Martinez and Telek scored goals for a 2-0 lead. A Madison Ravelo tally cut the lead to one but Hovanesian closed the period with a goal of her own to put CSUN on top 3-1. Concordia pulled to within one on two occassions in the second period, however, the Matadors answered with back-to-back strikes from Pal and Sandhagen. Pal found the net once more to beat the second period buzzer, extending the CSUN lead to 7-4.
Sandhagen would complete the hat trick with two goals to open the third period but Concordia notched a pair of goals to end the third period, pulling to within 9-6. CSUN gave up a goal to start the fourth period, however, three unanswered goals put the game away. Scarry, Hovanesian and Nicole Thomas helped stretch the lead to 12-7 with 1:57 to play as the Matadors held on in the closing minutes to pick up the win.
Jessica Matkovich earned the goalkeeping assignment against Concordia and racked up four saves.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"it's been a tough week internally so for us to grind this one out was rewarding. We were asking a few players to play outside of their position and comfort zone and they rose to the challenge for the victory over Cal Lutheran.
"We've come a long way in a week. Last week, we battled a good Concordia team to a one-goal victory. Today, we were in full control from start to finish. Anytime we get goals from seven different players the results will be in our favor. Our versatility and ability to adapt was on full display today and I couldn't be more proud of the team and how they competed."
