CSUN Clinches Series with Another Big Offensive Display
2/18/2023 6:11:00 PM | Baseball
Much like game one of the series, the Matadors jumped on the Seawolves in the early innings. Simons led off the game with a single before reaching second base on a wild pitch then scoring on a Graysen Tarlow RBI single. Later in the frame, Kramer singled up the middle for an RBI while Ben Griffin added to the lead with an RBI single as well. Shunsuke Sakaino drove in the Matadors' fourth run on another single and Griffin later scored on a Stony Brook fielding error.
Bainton made short work of the Seawolves through the first two innings, retiring all six batters he faced. Stony Brook though came away with two runs in the third inning, capitalizing on a CSUN miscue to start the inning. Bainton stranded two runners on base in the third inning then went on to retire seven of eight batters.
Meanwhile, CSUN added to its lead in the bottom of the third when Mason Le doubled in Kramer before coming around to score himself on a Stony Brook throwing error. The Matadors would break the game open in the fifth inning, registering their third seven-run frame already of the series.
In that fifth inning, Kamau Neighbors drove in two on a single while Simons smacked a two-run homer to left field. Moments later, Andrew Sojka worked a walk, setting up Emanuel Dean for an RBI double. Kramer capped off the scoring barrage with a two-run shot to right for a 14-3 lead.
Bainton allowed a single tally in the sixth but faced the minimum in the seventh inning. Jon Mocherman and Hayden Cody combined to toss the final six outs.
GAME NOTES
All nine Matador starters had at least one hit including six posting multiple-hit performances. Along with Joey Kramer, Emanuel Dean had three hits to go with two runs scored while Ben Griffin, Mason Le, Shunsuke Sakaino and Jakob Simons had two-hit days. Simons' homer was the first of his CSUN career.
Right-handed pitcher Hayden Cody made his first appearance on the mound for CSUN since suffering a season-ending injury in his Matador debut on April 4, 2021. Cody would retire all three batters he faced, picking up a strikeout on Saturday.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"We came out aggressive. We talked ahead of time how we wanted to be the first team to punch. We did that by being aggressive in the zone. Again, it always comes back to the discipline for me. We were able to lay off the tough pitches, force them out of the zone and capitalize on them. In those first few innings, we hit some balls hard and hitting them where they weren't today.
What I have appreciated about Thomas [Bainton] was that whether anyone scores zero runs or eight runs, he's the same person and consistent. I thought he would be really good in the Saturday role to go deep into the games and pound the zone. There's still a lot to learn with how good hitters are at this level, he's learning that and he can't take pitches off. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better start for him."
HAYDEN CODY ON HIS RETURN TO THE MOUND
"I was warming up thinking that it was going to be a normal day. No, the adrenaline was back and it was a good feeling to have. Obviously, no pitcher wants to get out there in a 10-run game but I think for me that was perfect. It didn't give me the pressure to be perfect. It gave me the chance to settle down, get down in the zone, get some outs and get used to being back on that bump."
