CSUN Comes Back From 9 Down With a Minute to go to win in OT at CSUB

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Trailing by nine with 1:03 to go in regulation, CSUN tied the score at 62 at CSU Bakersfield before defeating the Roadrunners 73-66 in overtime in Big West women's basketball action at the Icardo Center Thursday afternoon.
FIRST HALF
Both defenses were on display early as the clubs combined to shoot 4-for-16 in the first five minutes. Thanks to an Anaiyah Tu'uafree throw, the Matadors led 5-4 at the first quarter media timeout. Laney Amundsen's three-pointer out of the timeout extended the advantage to four.
The Matadors held the Roadrunners to 3-of-15 shooting in the first quarter and forced six CSU Bakersfield turnovers. CSUN used its height advantage to draw six fouls. The Matadors went 7-of-10 from the free throw line to take a 14-9 lead after 10 minutes.
Michelle Duchemin scored the first four points of the second for the Matadors to push the lead out to 18-11 four minutes in. CSUB held the Matadors of 3-of-13 shooting in the second quarter, outscoring CSUN 11-0 at one point. Kayla Morris scored nine of her 13 points in the second as the Roadrunners led 28-20 at halftime.
SECOND HALF
CSUB extended the run to 23-4 four minutes into the frame by scoring six of the first eight points. The Roadrunners led by as many as 11 in the third quarter. However, CSUN chipped away, reducing the lead to seven when Kayanna Spriggs sank free throws with just over a minute to play in the third.
The 'Runners extended the advantage to nine after Taylor Caldwell made two free throws on the next possession. Spriggs again drew a foul and made two free throws for a 41-34 score. CSU Bakersfield returned to the free throw line when Morris connected on 1-of-2 free throws. Spriggs was fouled when she rebounded Morris' miss on the second attempt. Spriggs was 1-of-2 from the line. Macy Smith recovered the second attempt and put it back to cut the lead to 42-37.
Morris sank two free throws 12 seconds into the fourth quarter to get the 'Runners to a 44-37 lead. After consecutive turnovers, Spriggs returned to the free throw line after being fouled on an offensive rebound. The 6-2 forward missed both attempts; however, Tu'ua got the rebound and drew CSUB's fourth foul in the first 90 seconds of the period.
Tu'ua's layup off the inbounds play made it a 44-39 game. CSUN's third foul in the first 120 seconds of the fourth resulted in a Simone Johnson free throw. Spriggs grabbed the rebound and passed to Duchemin, who was fouled. The 6-0 sophomore made two free throw attempts for a 45-41 game. Spriggs picked up her fourth foul on the ensuing CSU Bakersfield possession.
Caldwell sank both free throw attempts to create a six-point lead once again. Smith's layup cut it to 47-43. The 'Runners responded with a Morgan Edwards three-pointer. Spriggs was fouled out of a CSUB timeout and reset her career high with two made free throws for seven in the game and a 50-45 score.
Hennie van Schaik was fouled just before the media timeout. She was 1-of-2 from the free throw line. At 51-45, the Matadors committed a 30-second shot clock violation. The teams traded missed field goal attempts before van Schaik was fouled. She made both at the 3:16 mark to extend the advantage to eight. Caldwell fouled Duchemin the next time down for CSUN. Duchmemin connected on 1-of-2 attempts.
Norris' offensive rebound and putback raised her total to 22 and put CSUB up by nine. Tu'ua was fouled, but she made both with 2:32 to play. The Matadors called timeout, down 55-48. CSUN forced Caldwell to miss a jumper and appeared to be awarded the defensive rebound. However, the officials reversed the call, giving the ball back to CSU Bakersfield after a video review. CSUN got the stop, and Tu'ua was fouled again and made both free throw attempts.
Nesjie Ortiz made two free throws after being fouled with 1:24 to play. Trailing 57-50, Spriggs fouled out after being whistled for an offensive foul eight seconds later. Again, CSUN was forced to foul, finally sending Sophia Tougas to the charity stripe, where she connected on both with 1:03 remaining.
Ana Carolina De Jesus' basket 12 seconds later reduced it to seven as CSUN called timeout. Three seconds came off the clock before Taylor Caldwell was fouled. She was 1-of-2, and the Matadors got the rebound, leading to a Tu'ua drive. She was fouled, and she connected on each attempt. Trailing 60-54, the Matadors forced a turnover to regain the ball. Tu'ua missed a three-point shot, with the Matadors grabbing the rebound.
Duchemin was fouled her field goal off the inbounds pass to create a 60-56 game. She completed the three-point play for a three-point game. Tougas, an 88-percent free throw shooter, missed her first attempt. She sank the second to create a two-possession game, 61-57. CSUN called a timeout to advance the ball. De Jesus was fouled on the inbounds pass. The 6-3 forward connected on the first but missed the second. De Jesus missed the second attempt twice, but van Schaik was called for a lane violation each time. On the third try, De Jesus made the free throw. Leading 61-59, the Roadrunners called timeout at the 26-second mark.
CSUN nearly forced a turnover on the inbounds pass, but Ortiz was fouled. She missed the first free throw attempt but made the second. CSUN called a timeout to advance the ball. Smith banked a three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining to tie the score at 62. However, Caldwell missed a layup at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime.
OVERTIME
Tu'ua missed a pair of free throws to begin overtime. She got the offensive rebound and passed it to Tess Amundsen, who sank a three-pointer. The teams again traded missed field goal attempts before a Tougas layup. Tu'ua's jumper increased the score to 67-64 with 3:12 remaining.
Tu'ua increased the lead to five with a layup at 1:17. Ortiz was called for an intentional foul with 49 seconds remaining. However, Tu'ua was called for a technical foul on the play. The intentional and the technical canceled each other out, with Tu'ua being awarded a pair of free throws. The 5-9 point guard tied her career high (17) with two free throws.
Tougas missed a three-pointer down by seven. De Jesus got the rebound and passed it to Duchemin, who was 1-of-2 to make it 72-64. A CSUB foul followed Van Schaik's layup. De Jesus missed both of her free throw attempts; Morris got the rebound and called the timeout with 16 seconds to go. CSUN sent Julia Riley to the charity stripe one second later. She missed both of her attempts. Duchemin got the rebound and called timeout. van Schaik fouled out with 11 seconds remaining, sending Amundsen to the line. She was 1-of-2 for the final 73-66 score.

THE STATS
CSUN was 14-of-17 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, making 32-of-45 for the game. The 32 free throws are the fourth most in a game since CSUN moved to Division I in 1990. The 45 free throw attempts are the third most in a Matadors' D-1 game. Despite having four players foul out, the Roadrunners were 22-of-32 from the free throw line in the game. The teams combined for 62 fouls (33 for CSUB, 29 for CSUN).
The Matadors held the Roadrunners (6-19, 3-14 Big West) to 31.7 field goal shooting (20-of-67) while making 19-of-49 attempts (38.8%). CSUN outrebounded CSU Bakersfield 45-37.
Tu'ua, the CSUN point guard, recorded her first career double-double of 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. She added two assists, two blocks, and one steal. Duchemin scored 17, while De Jesus posted a season-best 10. Amundsen returned to the court for the Matadors for the first time since Feb. 9 (against CSUB) after recovering from injury. She scored six points to raise her career total between Boise State and CSUN to 955.
Morris and her fellow post, van Schaik, scored 23 points in the first half and 42 in the game. Morris reset her career high with 22. Van Schaik had 19.
