RIVERSIDE, Calif.—CSUN improved to 2-0 in Big West women's tennis play Sunday afternoon as the Matadors (5-2) shutout UC Riverside (2-6, 0-2 BW) 7-0 at the SRC Tennis Courts.
The teams played singles first due to the iffy weather forecast. Yuliia Zhytelna earned the opening CSUN victory at No. 3 singles with a straight sets decision, 6-1, 6-2 against Brionna Nguyen.
Sasha Turchak followed with her 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 versus Maya Youssef. Next Angela Ho handed Sofia Lazzaroni a 6-4, 6-0 defeat in the No. 4 slot. Jolene Coetzee clinched the dual victory at No. 1. She defeated Kamya Nair 6-0 in the first set at No. 1 before taking a tiebreaker 7-3 in the second to sweep the match.
Vitoria Solis Urdiales had to go to three sets in No. 5 play against Niki Shahbazi. Shahbazi defeated Solis Urdiales 6-3 in the first set before coming back to take set two 6-0 and clinching the match with a 6-4 victory in the third set. Emma Moratalla Sanz wrapped up singles by winning 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 6 versus Sydney Tran.
Turchak and Zhytelna began doubles by defeating Nair and Serina Saltzen 6-1. Coetzee and Ho followed with a 6-4 victory at No. 1 against Nguyen and Shahbazi. The dual closed with Cindy Ung and Solis Urdiales winning at No. 3 6-3 versus Lazzaroni and Youssef.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GARY VICTOR
"The team shook off the rust and competed well even if they were not feeling their shots as usual."
PLAYER REACTION
"I am very proud of my team today for fighting so hard and giving their best despite being able to practice for three days," Coetzee said. "Angela stepped it up during doubles when we were down and carried us to the victory. I am very proud of her."
"I had a rough start in the first set because we haven't played for three days because of the rain," said Solis Urdiales. "In the second set, I was able to gain momentum and win the set, which gave me a lot of confidence to close out the match in the third set."
" I played today with a lot of confidence in my game," said Moratella Sanz. "It was a tough match, and I found out the ways to win since it was not my best day. I am very proud of how all my teammates solved their matches to win this conference dual."
