2/4/2023 6:50:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
LA JOLLA, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo (3-2) split two matches on Saturday at the Triton Invite. The Matadors fell in the morning game to No. 12 UC Davis 15-6 but bounced back to pick up their first win at the event in a tight 11-10 decision over Concordia. Dorottya Telek, who scored 11 goals on the day, tied a school record for goals in a single game with seven against Concordia.
GAME 1 RECAP
UC Davis controlled the first period, scoring five goals while the Matadors were held without a goal over the first eight minutes. Telek finally broke up the shutout at the 6:12 mark of the second period but Sam Yoo hit the net for the Aggies just 19 seconds later. After CSUN earned a five-meter penalty, Telek struck the netting to cut the Aggies' lead to 6-2. CSUN though could not get any closer in the first half as Noelle Wijnbelt and Kelly Hungerford scored goals for a UC Davis 8-2 advantage.
The Matadors had their best offensive quarter in the third, scoring three times with Telek registering two goals and Tatiana Smeltzer also scoring. However, the Aggies answered with four goals of their own as CSUN trailed 12-5. Anna Pal closed the scoring for CSUN in the match on a power play with 3:56 to play. UC Davis netted three more shots in the fourth period for a 15-6 triumph.
Meghan Lopez racked up 11 saves in 32 minutes of action in front of the cage. Alexis Smith chipped in with two field blocks to go with an assist.
GAME 2 RECAP
Telek shouldered the load on offense for the Matadors throughout the match as she scored twice at the outset for a quick 2-0 lead. Concordia though answered with two-straight goals, one of which on a five-meter penalty for a 2-2 score after eight minutes. In the opening minute of the second period, Telek scored two more goals on even strength possessions, giving the Matadors a 4-2 edge. Telek pushed her scoring tally to five at the 3:23 mark of the second period then Tatum Scarry got into the scoring act with a goal of her own. A late CSUN exclusion led to a Concordia tally as the Matadors led 6-4 at intermission.
The Eagles fought their way in front in the third period, scoring three times including once on a five-meter penalty. Nicole Bacoyanis briefly evened the match at 7-7 but Josie Miller made a late shot to put Concordia on top 8-7 after 24 minutes.
Telek would tie the match at 8-8 and 9-9 early in the fourth quarter before Jessica Matkovich gave the Matadors the lead again at 10-9 with 4:27 to play. The Eagles would square the game once more on their next possession but the Matadors had an answer as Nicole Thomas found the netting with 3:40 on the clock. The Matadors' defense held firm down the stretch, holding the Eagles off the scoreboard the rest of the way to seal a win.
In net, Lopez finished with 11 more saves to go with four steals.
GAME NOTES
Telek's seven goals against Concordia tied four other Matadors for the most goals in a single game in program history. Chari Christopher (March 3, 2003), Whitney Delgado (Feb. 12, 2011), Lindsy Duncan (Jan. 27, 2013) and Madeleine Sanchez (Jan. 30, 2016) previously scored seven goals in a single match while at CSUN.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Spotting a team like UC Davis five goals in the first quarter is usually going to be a hole we can't dig out of. But playing them close for the rest of the game was a good learning experience and something we can build on early in the season."
"Concordia gave us a few offensive looks that we haven't seen this year so it was nice to see us make some in-game adjustments and be successful. Overall, I'm proud of the group for gutting out another win."
