LA JOLLA, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo dropped a tight 9-7 decision to No. 21 San Diego on Sunday at the Triton Invitational. Six Matadors hit the back of the net in the match with Dorottya Telek netting two goals. Goalkeeper Meghan Lopez had nine saves in front of the cage.
The Aztecs got off to a strong start, scoring the first two goals of the game for an early lead. Helena Sandhagen would cut the lead in half with 5:19 to play in the first quarter but San Diego State responded with a 3-0 run. Telek though closed the opening period with a goal off a five-meter penalty to bring CSUN to within 5-2.
The second period would be a defensive struggle with only one goal scored for either side. Anna Pal netted the first goal of the quarter for CSUN but the Matadors entered halftime trailing still by a 6-3 margin.
Both teams took advantage of exclusions to score goals to open the third period. The Aztecs would stretch their lead to 8-4 on a Kendall Houck goal but the Matadors fought back behind a goal from Jessica Matkovich and another tally from Telek off a five-meter penalty shot.
CSUN again made the most of a 6-on-5 advantage, pulling to within 8-7 on a goal from Shelby Hovanesian early in the fourth period. The Matadors' defense came up big several times throughout the quarter, withstanding three power plays as well as a five-meter penalty shot but San Diego State finally broke through with 2:54 to play on an even-strength goal by Claudia Valdes.
CSUN gained a power play chance on the following possession, however, the Matadors could not hit the net as the Aztecs held on down the stretch for the victory.
GAME NOTES
Telek surpassed 100 career goals in the match as her two tallies pushed her personal total to 101 in just 32 matches. Helena Sandhagen and Nicole Thomas had two steals apiece on Sunday.
