Matadors to Open Series Tonight vs. Pacific, Visit Pepperdine on Monday

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball will open its weekend series against Pacific on Friday in an effort to combat inclement weather scheduled for the weekend. The teams will play their opener at 6:45 p.m. on Friday night before playing a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Matadors will conclude a busy four-day stretch by taking on Pepperdine in Malibu on Monday at 2:30 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
CSUN is coming off its second series win of the season as the Matadors took two of three games from Creighton last weekend at Matador Field.
The Matadors let a three run lead slip away in the eighth inning of game one in an eventual 7-6 loss. In game two, CSUN bounced back by scoring seven runs over its last three at bats to prevail 12-8. The Matadors received seven quality innings from Kenji Pallares in the rubber match while Ali Camarillo drove in three runs to lift CSUN to a 4-3 win.

Graysen Tarlow kept up his hot hitting in the series, finishing 4-for-9 at the plate with four runs scored. Camarillo drove in four total runs in the three games to go with 4-of-10 hitting. Pallares allowed three runs in his seven-inning stint to earn his second win of the season.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Heading into this weekend's series, catcher Graysen Tarlow is sixth in the nation in on-base percentage (.634) and seventh in batting average (.516). Both averages are second-best in The Big West while he also ranks third in the league in RBI (15), fourth in hits (16) and sixth in runs scored (11).
Other Big West leaders include Emanuel Dean who is third in the conference in doubles (3). Jakob Simons ranks fourth in the league in stolen bases (4), fifth in homers (3), ninth in RBI (10) and 10th in runs scored (10). On the pitching side, Lucas Braun is third in the conference with 24 strikeouts while Kenji Pallares is second in wins (2) and fourth in innings pitched (17.0).
As a team, CSUN enters the weekend first in The Big West in batting average (.307) and on-base percentage (.432). The Matadors' pitching are also second in the conference in strikeouts (81) and opposing batting average (.229).
After playing eight of their first nine games at Matador Field, CSUN hits the road for 10 of 11 games including the next seven. The Matadors will open up Big West play on the road next weekend at UC Davis from March 17-19. CSUN then hosts Pepperdine on March 21 before traveling to defending Big West champ UC Santa Barbara from March 24-26.
SERIES HISTORY
CSUN leads Pacific in the all-time series by a 31-22 margin. The Matadors have won the last seven meetings, all of which played at home, including posting a four-game sweep last season at Matador Field. CSUN is making its first trip to Stockton since May 2012 when the Tigers were still members of The Big West. In that series in Stockton, CSUN would be swept in a three-game series by Pacific.
The Matadors are playing Pepperdine for the third time already this season. The teams met up at Matador Field for two games in late February with each side coming out on top in one-run games. The Waves defeated the Matadors 5-4 on Feb. 26 while CSUN came out on top 6-5 two days later. Pepperdine leads CSUN in the all-time series 48-45-2.
SCOUTING PACIFIC
The Tigers dropped to 4-7 on the season after a midweek loss at Fresno State (5-4). Pacific though picked up a road sweep of New Mexico State last weekend. Last season, the Tigers finished 14-38 overall. Pacific was picked to finish 10th in the West Coast Conference by the league's coaches. Chris Rodriguez is in his third season as head coach of the program.
Rylan Evans tops the team with a .468 batting average followed closely by Ben Nemivant with a .467 batting average. Nemivant leads Pacific in RBI with 10 while Jacob Weiss has a team-high two homers to go with six RBI. On the mound, Grant Stevens, who makes the start in game one, has 11 strikeouts in 13.2 innings of work.
SCOUTING PEPPERDINE
The Waves fell at UC Santa Barbara this past Tuesday by an 11-1 score to slip to 4-6 on the season. Pepperdine finished 2-1 at the South Alabama Invitational last weekend where the Waves would pick up wins over South Alabama (12-5) and Southern (16-0). The Waves are 1-2 on the season at Eddy D. Field Stadium, dropping two of three games against Boston College. Head coach Rick Hirtensteiner is in his eighth season leading the team.
Ryan Johnson leads the Waves in batting (.472), homers (7), runs (11) and RBI (15). Greg Mahlhaff has homered three times and driven in nine runs to go with a .250 batting average. Other top hitters include Jack Basseer who is batting .324 with five RBI. Shane Telfer tops the team with 13 strikeouts while posting a 1.13 ERA.
