STOCKTON, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (8-3) evened its weekend series with Pacific with a 2-1 five-inning victory on Saturday at Klein Family Field. The game was stopped in the top of the sixth due to lightning in the area before being officially called when the field conditions were deemed poor. Thomas Bainton tossed all five innings, allowing one run on two hits to go with four strikeouts.
The Matadors would jump in front at the outset of the game. Jakob Simons led off the top of the first with a single before moving up to third base on two wild pitches. Shunsuke Sakaino followed with a groundout to the right side, allowing Simons to score the game's first run.
Pacific though answered in its home half of the first inning in similar fashion. A leadoff single from Ben Nemivant started the inning then Bainton committed a balk to move the runner into scoring position. Rylan Evans sacrificed Nemivant to third base before Chaz Myers hit an RBI groundout to even the game up at 1-1.
The first inning would be the only blemish against Bainton on the afternoon. The right-hander retired eight-straight batters as well as 10 of 11 during the middle portion of the game, giving the Matador offense an opportunity to reclaim the lead.
The score remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the fourth. Ali Camarillo began the rally by drawing a two-out walk. Moments later, Kevin Fitzer rifled a triple to right field, bringing home a Camarillo for a 2-1 CSUN lead.
Bainton protected the one-run advantage into the bottom of the fifth where the Tigers would threaten to score. In that frame, a hit batter and a walk put runners at the corners with two outs. Bainton battled Evans to a 3-2 count before yielding a hard-hit ball up the middle. However, Sakaino made a game-saving diving catch going to his right for the final out of the fifth.
GAME NOTES
Both Jacob Simons and Graysen Tarlow finished 1-for-2 at the plate as each extended their on-base streaks to 11 games. Kevin Fitzer, who also went 1-for-2 at the plate, has hit safely in six-straight games. Thomas Bainton improved to 2-0 on the season in four appearances in 2023.
The Matadors would bat in the top of the sixth in the game with Luc Stuka drawing a walk and Ali Camarillo picking up a single. However, the game was halted and eventually called. As a result, only the first five innings are official.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"Thomas carried us today. He pitched five strong innings and kept us in it long enough to score when our offense scuffled. Shun saved the game with a diving play. If we can continue to pitch and play defense, we will be in a lot of games."
UP NEXT
Weather permitting, the Matadors will play Pacific in the finale of their weekend series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
