NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN defeated Sacramento State 4-3 to record the 500th victory in the history of the Matadors' women's tennis program. Established in 1977, CSUN is 500-397 all-time.
Jolene Coetzee and Angela Ho put CSUN into the lead when they opened the doubles play with a 6-1 victory over Weronika Ejsmont and Best Lee. The Hornets tied doubles at No. 2 as Mayya Gorbunova, and Tsveti Yotova defeated Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna 6-3. Sacramento State earned the doubles point when Maddy Ferreros and Julia Moraes defeated Vitoria Solis Urdiales and Jacqueline O'Neill 6-3.
Zhytelna recorded her team-leading 11th victory at No. 3 to begin singles action. The redshirt sophomore (11-3) defeated Ejsmont in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Turchak put the Matadors into the lead when she handed Ferreros a 6-2, 6-4 defeat at No. 2.
Gorbuova tied the dual at No. 1, winning 6-4, 6-4 versus Coetzee. Then, Tallia Harper returned the lead to the Matadors as she swept Alexis Johnson 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6. Ho clinched the dual in the No. 5 match. Ho, who improved to 10-2 on the year in singles, defeated Lee 6-2 in the opening set. She fell behind 5-2 before battling back to send the set to a tiebreaker and winning 7-4. Yotova won the day's final match, defeating Emma Moratalla Sanz 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 4.
CSUN played its fifth dual in the last eight days, with the previous two coming in Hawai'i. The Matadors improved to 13-3 (3-1 Big West) on the season, while Sacramento State fell to 6-7.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GARY VICTOR
"Coming off a redeye yesterday, we were tired but showed a ton of resilience. It's on me for the scheduling, and our tough kids bailed us out."
PLAYER REACTION
"I am proud of everyone's fight today. Personally, this match was more of a mental battle than a physical one. I'm just happy I could stay tough and find a way to win amidst playing with so many adversities."
"Going into singles, I was confident because Jojo and I did well in doubles. The first singles set was chill, but the second set was challenging because I missed more and hit my head on a bench. However, with the help of James' (Ciuffo) coaching, I was able to come back from 2-5 and win 7-6(4)."
