STANFORD, Calif. - Kyle Hobus, Lorenzo Bertozzi and Griffin Walters combined for 33 of CSUN's 42 kills to lead the 14th-ranked Matadors to a 3-0 upset win over No. 10 Stanford in a non-conference match Friday evening at Maples Pavilion.
The Matadors (12-5, 1-0) won by the score of 25-20, 25-23, 26-24 as they picked up their first win at Stanford since 2018. The loss drops the Cardinal to 9-7 on the season.
KEY STATISTICS
• Hobus put down a match-high 14 kills while hitting .379 on 29 swings. He also added six digs, two blocks and one ace.
• Bertozzi added 10 kills on 15 errorless attacks to hit a career-high .667. The sophomore added eight digs to come within two of his second double-double of the season. Walters chipped in nine kills on .33 hitting to go with a pair of aces and three digs.

COACH THEO EDWARDS SAID
"We're incredibly focused on staying in the present and living in the moment, and this was the best version of that tonight. I thought this was the most complete match we've played this season so far. When Stanford got hot and made some runs, we did a great job of limiting the damage. We're doing a really good job of immediately re-setting and getting back in the system. I thought this was Donovan's best match of the season, he was incredibly consistent and was truly a great leader on the court. I also have to single out Lorenzo who was pretty unstoppable and had some huge kills for us."
SET 1
Neither team held more than a two-point lead until a Hobus kill opened up a 7-4 Matador lead. Another Hobus kill kept the CSUN lead at three (10-7) when Walters' serve was initially ruled out before the call was overturned giving the Matadors an 11-7 cushion. The lead swelled to five on the next point when Bertozzi and King teamed up for a block. Another block, this time by Hobus and Tello opened up CSUN's largest lead at 14-8 before a late Stanford rally cut the lead down to three at 19-16. But the Matadors used kills from Bertozzi and Walters to push the lead back to five which turned out to be the final margin in a 25-20 CSUN win.
SET 2
After hitting .652 in the opening set, the Matadors would hit .423 in the second to take the set that featured 18 ties and three lead changes. The two teams traded sideouts for much of the set before a Stanford ace gave the hosts a 13-11 lead. The Cardinal maintained a two-point lead at 14-12 and would lead 15-14 at the media timeout. The Matadors took their first lead since 8-7 when a Hobus ace put CSUN in front 18-17. With the score tied at 19-19, the Matadors took advantage of a pair Stanford errors to open up a 21-19 advantage. The hosts would score two straight to knot the score before another Hobus kill and a Cardinal hitting error gave the Matadors a 23-21 lead. CSUN would then claim two of the final four points, the last coming on a Stanford service error, to take a 25-23 win.
SET 3
The final set was equally tight despite CSUN jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. A 4-1 Stanford run trimmed the Matador lead to 5-4 and from that point on neither team would lead by more than two the remainder of the set. A Walters kill gave CSUN a 19-17 lead before the hosts tied the score at 20-20 on a Rottman kill. Kills by Tello and Hobus would force a Cardinal timeout at 22-20 when two straight Stanford points forced a Matador timeout. The score remained tied at 23-23 and 24-24 when Walters connected for a kill before he would roll a shot off the Stanford block on match point sending the Matadors to the 26-24 win. Â
