CSUN Opens Series at Long Beach State on Friday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (19-8, 6-3 Big West) resumes Big West action with a weekend road series against Long Beach State. The opener is set for 6 p.m. and continues on Saturday at 6 p.m. before wrapping up on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Live stats will be provided for all three games.

LAST WEEK'S SERIES
This past weekend, the Matadors took a break from conference play to make a cross country road trip to Mercer for a three-game series. Weather forced the series to be scheduled for Thursday and Friday with a doubleheader played on the final day. CSUN dropped the series opener 9-2 before evening the series with a 10-1 win in the opener of the doubleheader. Mercer would take the rubber match by a 4-2 score.
In CSUN's lone win of the weekend, the Matadors homered three times with Emanuel Dean smacking his first career long ball. Thomas Bainton would go the distance in the victory, tossing a seven-inning complete game with only one run allowed on three hits. Kamau Neighbors also hit his first career home run in the opener of the series.
MATADOR HEADLINES
CSUN enters play this weekend 2.5 games back of first place UC San Diego (10-2) in The Big West standings, however, the Matadors are just one game back of the loss column. Cal State Fullerton (9-3) and UC Santa Barbara (6-3) are tied with the Matadors in the loss column while Long Beach State has an 8-4 league record.
In the Mercer series, the Matadors were held under three runs for just the third and fourth time this season. CSUN has gone just 1-3 in games where it scores two runs or fewer thus far this season. On the flip side, the Matadors are 18-5 in games where they score at least three runs including 16-1 when scoring six or more runs.
The Matadors' offense ranks 12th in the nation in batting average with a .319 clip while the team paces The Big West in the category. CSUN also leads the league in on-base percentage (.413), slugging percentage (.492), stolen bases (46) and sacrifice hits (19). The team is also second in The Big West in runs (220), hits (295) and RBI (203).
Individually, five Matadors are on The Big West's top-10 in batting average with Ali Camarillo ranking third (.377) followed by Jakob Simons in fourth (.374), Graysen Tarlow in fifth (.368), Kevin Fitzer in seventh (.354) and Shunsuke Sakaino in 10th (.346). Simons is the league leader in home (9) and stolen bases (10) while he is second in slugging percentage (.727) and runs scored (29), third in on-base percentage (.479) and ninth in hits (37). Sakaino is also tops in The Big West in on-base percentage (.495). On the mound, Lucas Braun ranks second in conference in strikeouts (59) and innings pitched (48.1) while Thomas Bainton and Kenji Pallares are third in wins with four apiece.

Long Beach State leads CSUN 85-69-1 in the all-time series. The Matadors took two of three games from the Dirtbags last season for the program's first series win over Long Beach State since 2010. The teams last played at Blair FIeld in 2021 with each side winning twice in a four-game series. Prior to the series split two seasons ago, the Dirtbags had won nine consecutive series from the Matadors at home.

Long Beach State (21-10, 8-4 Big West) comes into this weekend winners of 11 of its last 13 games. The Dirtbags knocked off Fresno State, 10-7, on Tuesday. This past weekend, the Dirtbags took two of three games at UC Irvine for their third-straight conference series win. Prior to the season, Long Beach State was picked to finish third in the conference by the league's head coaches. Eric Valenzuela is in his fourth season as head coach of the program.
Long Beach State hitters have earned the last three Big West Field Player of the Week awards with Connor Burns taking this past week's honor. Jonathon Long, who won the weekly conference honors two weeks ago, tops The Big West in hits (42), RBI (34) and home runs (9) to go with a team-high .341 batting average. Kyle Ashworth is hitting .318 with 20 RBI while Eddie Saldivar has a .310 average and 22 RBI. Burns has seven homers, 23 RBI and a .302 average at the plate. On the pitching side, Nico Zeglin tops the conference in strikeouts (63) while posting a 2.44 ERA. Graham Osman, who starts the opener, is a perfect 5-0 with a 1.93 ERA. As a team, the Dirtbags are second in The Big West in homers (39) and third in ERA (4.30).
