Matadors Sweep Cal State LA Twice to Cap Home Season

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN beach volleyball team (15-13) concluded the 2023 home season by sweeping a pair of dual matches from visiting Cal State LA Thursday afternoon at the CSUN Beach Volleyball Complex.
CSUNÂ 5, CAL STATE LAÂ 0
The Matadors won all 12 sets in first dual of the day as they improved to 11-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles. Victoria Rogers and Layla Cederlind picked up the opening point for CSUN in the No. 4 pair, sweeping Ayjah Landers and Jaden Grova, 21-19, 21-11. The Matadors would complete the opening flight with a sweep at No. 2 as Emily Sparks and Mac McCarthy held off Emily Elliott and Eliza Cannon, 23-21, 21-18 before Abigail Alvarez and Kinley Lindhardt teamed up to win the exhibition (No. 6) pair over Rachel Lowe and Beatriz Jimenez by the score of 21-9, 21-7.
Abbey Sweeting and Gabriela Griego won for the 17th time as a pair as CSUN clinched the dual with an efficient 21-9, 21-7 victory over Tehya Chadwick and Rebecca Topete in the No. 5 pair. The Matadors made it 4-0 when Lauren Eknoian and Tasha Mae posted a dominating 21-7, 21-8 win over Ashley Dittmann and Jameson Sanders in the No. 1 pair on center court before Seyvion Waggoner and Mikaela Maughan completed the 5-0 win with a 21-13, 21-11 win over Shelby Grubbs and Haley Roundtree at No. 3.

The same two teams then squared off for the third time in 2023 as the Matadors earned their 15th win of the season and their ninth 5-0 sweep. Rogers and Cederlind again got CSUN on the board first, winning in straight sets over Landers and Grova, 21-11, 21-15. Sparks and McCarthy would have to go the distance in the No. 2 pair as the Golden Eagles' Elliott and Cannon won the first set before CSUN battled back to win 14-21, 21-19, 15-6.
Waggoner and Maughan also went three sets to clinch the win as they held on to defeat Grubbs and Roundtree, 16-21, 21-6, 15-9 in the No. 3 pair. The final two pairs went to the Matadors in straight sets as Sweeting and Griego posted a 21-6, 21-7 win over Chadwick and Topete before Eknoian and Mae topped Dittmann and Sanders, 21-5, 21-15. The win for Sweeting and Griego was their 18th as a pair which matches the single-season pairs record held three CSUN pairs (Kailey Klein/Rogers, Taylor Brydon/Lauren McMurray, Aeryn Owens/Katie Sato).Â

"Good last day at home. Always a good feeling to get some wins on the last home event. We will have to be better tomorrow in order to beat Bakersfield and Westcliff. Our ball control and shot selection will be the most important factors we need to focus on to be successful tomorrow."

CSUN travels to Bakersfield on Friday to take on the host Roadrunners and Westcliff at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex. The Matadors meet CSUB at 10 a.m. and Westcliff at 12 p.m.
