NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN women's golf team is set to open the 2023 Big West Women's Golf Championship Sunday at Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas. Nine teams will play 54 holes over three days (Apr. 16-18) in a battle for the Big West crown.
The three-day championship tournament will be contested at Spanish Trail Country Club for the first time. The course will play at a par-72, 6,315 yard layout for the Big West Championship. The Matadors are seeded ninth in the championship and will be paired with No. 7 seed UC Irvine and No. 8 seed CSU Bakersfield for Sunday's opening round.
Head coach Michelle Winkler's five-player lineup will consist of Grace Bettis, Elle Laur, Gracie Piar, Fernanda Sosa Stackpole and Kim Turgut.
"I think overall we've made improvements this semester, and we've had many productive practices and conversations these last two weeks," said Winkler. "The expectations for my team are to stick to the game plan, choose wise decisions to limit mental mistakes, and enjoy each moment! I'm so proud of how far we've come since last year, and I know they're going to compete with their best effort."
Bettis, Laur and Sosa Stackpole are the three players in the CSUN lineup to have previously played in a Big West Championship. Sosa Stackpole finished tied for 29th at 25-over 241 (76-84-81) while Laur tied for 31st at 28-over 244 (78-83-83) at the 2022 Big West Championship conference championship at San Luis Obispo Country Club. Bettis competed for the Matadors at the 2021 Big West Championship at Yorba Linda Country Club, finishing 30th at 15-over 231 following rounds of 73-78-81.
Piar, a freshman from East Alton, Ill., comes into the championship with a team-leading 77.67 scoring average in 24 rounds. Piar has CSUN's lone individual win this season, claiming the Utah Tech Trailblazer Invitational on Feb. 14. Sosa Stackpole ranks second at 78.25 over 24 rounds while Laur carries a 78.62 scoring average and had a career-best 14th-place finish two weeks ago at the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational in Utah. Turgut comes into the championship with a season scoring average of 79.17 followed by Bettis at 79.60.
CSUN, which took home Big West Championships in both 2003 and 2004, is looking to replicate or better its team finish from 2019 when the Matadors finished second to Long Beach State. CSUN also finished as championship runner-up to UC Davis in 2014.
Â
Brianna Steger had CSUN's best finish in recent years, finishing as individual runner-up in 2019 after posting rounds of 69-71-77 to finish at (+1) 217 at Moorpark Country Club. The Matadors have had three players win or tie for the individual championship, Beth Allen in 2003 and 2004 and Clariss Guce in 2014.
The Big West champion and top individual automatically qualify for one of six NCAA regionals. The 2023 NCAA Women's Golf Championship will be held May 20-25 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
