LONG BEACH, Calif.---Thomas Bainton tossed 6.2 shutout innings to help CSUN Baseball (21-8, 8-3 Big West) to a 3-2 win at Long Beach State (21-12, 8-6 Big West) on Saturday at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. The victory clinches the Matadors' first series win at Long Beach State since the 2001 season. Bainton struck out seven batters while allowing just two hits on the night. On the hitting side, Mason Le collected two hits and Jakob Simons drove in two of the three runs.
Bainton gave the Matadors one of his best outings of the season, no-hitting the Dirtbags over 5.2 innings.
Bainton began the game by retiring the first five batters then he would retire nine of the first 11 batters. After a CSUN error to lead off the bottom of the fourth, Bainton retired the next eight batters in a row. Rocco Peppi finally broke up the no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth, but catcher Graysen Tarlow eventually threw out Peppi at second base to maintain the shutout.Â
While Bainton dazzled on the mound, Dirtbag pitcher Nico Zeglin also put up zeroes on the scoreboard for Long Beach State. The Matadors managed just one hit, a Nathan Barraza single in the third, through the first four frames against Zeglin.
However, CSUN would break through in the fifth with timely two-out hits. Le legged out a leadoff infield single to open the frame. After Andrew Sojka sacrificed Le into scoring position, Shunsuke Sakaino collected an infield single to put runners at the corners with two outs. Tarlow followed next with an RBI single to center to score the game's first run. Moments later, Simons rifled a two-run double down the left-field line, putting the Matadors on top 3-0.
Bainton returned to the mound in the seventh inning where he gave up a leadoff hit to Connor Burns. The next two Dirtbag hitters would be reitred before Bainton was lifted from the game in favor of Xavier Martinez.
Martinez protected the lead over the next inning plus, retiring four of five batters to maintain a 3-0 advantage heading to the ninth.
The Dirtbags forged one final rally in the top of the ninth against CSUN closer Joshua Romero. The first two batters would reach on walks before Romero retired Jack Hammond on a flyout. Long Beach State broke up the shutout moments later on an RBI single from Kyle Ashworth.Â
CSUN's lead was then cut to 3-2 when Cole Santander reached on a fielding error at shortstop. With runners at first and third base and one out, Romero went to work on the mound. Romero first stuck out Joey Walls then induced a groundball off the bat of Ty Borgogno that ended the game.
GAME NOTES
After his strong outing on Saturday, Thomas Bainton has allowed just one run on five hits over his last 13.2 innings of work.
Xavier Martinez tossed 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit. Joshua Romero notched his sixth save of the season as he allowed two runs, one of which earned.
Shunsuke Sakaino extended his on-base streak to 16 games after going 1-for-5. With two RBI, Jakob Simons registered his team-high 10th multiple-RBI game of the year.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"Bainton filled up the zone and executed as well as he has all season. Xavier followed with a solid outing and Romero picked himself and his teammates up in the end. The pitching staff won us this game. They overcame defensive miscues and continued to trust their execution.
Overall, this was a solid win. We need to continue to win these tight games on the road if we want to make another jump as a program."
