THE TOURNAMENT FIELD
Hawai'i is the tournament's top seed for the fifth time out of seven years. The Rainbow Wahine enter the double-elimination event ranked eighth in today's AVCA Collegiate Beach Coaches Poll and sporting a 26-6 overall record on the season. UH receives the only bye in the seven-team championship bracket and will open against the winner of CSU Bakersfield (4) vs. Cal Poly (5).
The two-day double-elimination bracket will see a flurry of matches each day of play, beginning at 8 a.m. local time (11 a.m. PDT). Nine matches will be played on Friday and the field will be whittled to four squads who will take to the sand on Saturday. The field will then be pared down to two finalists who will compete for the Big West crown.
Last year, tournament hosts and No. 3 seed Cal Poly earned their third consecutive Big West title, topping the No. 1 Hawai'i in the third-straight championship final duel by a score of 3-2. A conference-sponsored sport since 2016, only the Mustangs and Rainbow Wahine have been victors in the event. Hawai'i earned the first three straight titles, and are now joined by Cal Poly with three-peat status. The Rainbow Wahine won the championship when UH hosted the Big West Beach Championship at Queen's Beach in 2018.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
UC Davis (18-10) has won five straight heading into the Big West Championship. The Aggies, who defeated the Matadors 4-1 in San Luis Obispo on Mar. 26, defeated Santa Clara (3-2), Sacramento State (4-1) and Pacific (5-0) in Stockton (Apr. 15) in their most recent matches. Against Santa Clara, UCD's No. 3 pair of Mia Olen and Megan Luly came back from a 14-11 deficit to win the match (17-15) and duel for the Aggies.
Series: CSUN is 2-4 all-time against UC Davis which includes a 1-1 mark against the Aggies in the Big West Championship. The two teams met in the 2019 championship at Zuma Beach in 2019 with the Matadors taking a 4-1 win. The Aggies claimed a 5-0 win last season in San Luis Obispo to eliminate CSUN from the tournament.
BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
2023 not only marks CSUN's 10th season of beach volleyball but its eighth season as a member of the Big West Conference. The Matadors are 6-12 all-time in the Big West Championship since the inaugural championship in 2016. The postseason tournament was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After winning two of three matches on the opening day, CSUN came up empty against No. 3 seed Long Beach State on Saturday and was the fourth squad eliminated from the tournament. Cal Poly, the No. 2 seed, went undefeated in four tournament matches to capture its first conference championship along with the Big West's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Hawai'i, the top seed coming in, finished second.
At the 2018 championship in Hawai'i, the Matadors were seeded fourth in the six-team field in but were upset by fifth-seeded CSU Bakersfield in the opening round (3-2). CSUN then fell to No. 2 seed Cal Poly in an elimination match (5-0).Â
