NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo (17-12, 1-6 Big West) wrapped up the regular season with a 12-5 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a Big West match on Saturday afternoon at Matador Pool. Dorottya Telek recorded a hat trick and finished the regular season with 100 goals while Helena Sandhagen and Valeria Martinez had two goals apiece. Meghan Lopez recorded 16 saves and picked up a goal.
Telek notched her first goal at the 5:34 mark of the first period to open up the scoring. CSUN pushed the lead to 2-0 with a tally from Anna Pal but the Titans answered with a late goal to close the first eight minutes of action.
The Matadors took control in the second period, holding the Titans off the scoreboard over the eight-minute session. Meanwhile, Tatiana Smeltzer found the back of the net along with Telek who scored her second goal of the match at the five-minute mark. Valeria Martinez and Jessica Matkovich would also get into the scoring act to help extend the Matador lead to 6-1 at intermission.
An early penalty called on CSUN allowed Fullerton to score its second goal in the third period but the Matadors quickly responded with tallies from Sandhagen and Lacey Hall. After the Titans' Brittney Pino scored on a power play, Martinez dented the twine to stretch the lead back to 9-3.
Telek scored her historic 100th goal of the season via a penalty shot at the 7:08 mark of the fourth period. Sandhagen notched her second goal of the day as well in the final stanza while Lopez netted a shot from near her post into an open net. Fullerton picked up a pair of late tallies in the final minute to close the contest.
GAME NOTES
Prior to the match, the Matadors honored senior Lacey Hall who played in her final career match at Matador Pool.
Dorottya Telek is the first Matador in team history to score 100 goals in a season. On March 7, Telek broke the previous single-season scoring mark held by Whitney Delgado with her 81st tally.
With 16 saves on the day, Meghan Lopez tied Jillian Stapf (2010) for the sixth-most saves in a season in team history. In her career, Lopez has recorded 601 saves, which ranks as the fifth-most in the history of the program.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Today was a special day, honoring our lone senior Lacey Hall who is a true ambassador to our program. A conference win at home to wrap up the regular season of conference play feels good. I'm proud of the effort and energy we showed not only in preparing for this game but executing the game plan today as well. We were able to control the pace of the game from start to finish and the results speak for themselves."
UP NEXT
CSUN turns its attention to next week's Big West Championship held at UC Santa Barbara. Seeded seventh, the Matadors will take on second seeded Hawai'i in the opening round on Friday, April 28 at 1 p.m.
