Matadors Make the Midweek Trip to San Diego on Tuesday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (23-11) opens another busy week of action with a midweek road trip to the University of San Diego on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. The game will be streamed on WCCSports.com.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUP

LAST WEEK'S SERIES
The Matadors posted their third-straight conference series win by taking two of three games from Cal Poly at Matador Field this past weekend. CSUN would win the first two games in come-from-behind fashion as the Matadors won 12-10 and 10-6 before losing the series finale 4-2.
Cal Poly would lead by as many as seven runs in the opener of the series including 10-5 entering the bottom of the eighth before CSUN rallied for seven runs in the frame, highlighted by a go-ahead grand slam from Shunsuke Sakaino. The Matadors then rallied from a 3-1 deficit in game two, scoring nine times over the seventh and eighth innings with Mason Le providing the game-winning hit, a three-run homer to put CSUN on top for good. In game three, CSUN held a 2-0 lead early, but Cal Poly picked up timely hits to win the finale.
Joey Kramer provided four hits, all of which extra base hits in the series, including two home runs on Saturday. Jakob Simons would hit his team-leading 11th home run of the series as well. On the pitching side, Xavier Martinez worked 5.2 innings out of the bullpen with one unearned run allowed over two appearances while Jon Mocherman tossed five innings in the finale with one run allowed in his first collegiate start.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Tuesday will be CSUN's final midweek road game of the season. The Matadors host the final two midweeks against San Diego State (May 2) and Pepperdine (May 9). After Tuesday, the Matadors welcome first-place Cal State Fullerton to Matador Field for a three-game weekend series starting Friday.
CSUN (10-5 Big West) enters the week tied for second place in The Big West standings with UC Santa Barbara (10-5). The Matadors and Gauchos are 3.5 games back of Cal State Fullerton (15-3) for the top spot in the league. CSUN has won four of its first five series to start league play including both of its home series.
After another big week at the plate, the Matadors remain The Big West leader in batting average (.314) while they also pace the conference in runs scored (268), hits (367), RBI (249), stolen bases (54), sacrifice hits (.25) and fielding percentage (.976). CSUN's pitching staff is the league leader in saves (12) and fourth in ERA (4.68).
Individually, Jakob Simons is first in The Big West in on-base percentage (.477) and stolen bases (10) while he is second in batting average (.373), slugging percentage (.730), runs scored (36), RBI (38) and home runs (11). Ali Camarillo is up to fifth in the league in batting average (.349), eighth in slugging percentage (.566) and ninth in RBI (31). Graysen Tarlow is also eighth on The Big West batting list with a .342 average while he sits in sixth place in on-base percentage (.454), runs scored (33) and stolen bases (8).
With two more saves this weekend, Joshua Romero is alone as The Big West leader in saves with eight this season. Lucas Braun remains in second place in innings pitched (59.2) and third in strikeouts (69) while Thomas Bainton is second in wins with five.
SERIES HISTORY
CSUN goes for the season sweep of San Diego on Tuesday after winning 12-10 on March 28 at Matador Field. The Matadors racked up 16 hits in the victory over the Toreros with Mason Le and Shunsuke Sakaino posting three-hit efforts. Ryan Wentz went five innings in relief, allowing two unearned runs to pick up the win.
The Matadors hold a 36-29-2 edge in the all-time series with wins over the last three meetings. CSUN is making its first trip to Fowler Park since April 30, 2013, when the Matadors won 6-4.

Since last playing CSUN on March 28, USD has gone 9-6 and improved its record to 18-19-1. The Toreros are coming of a three-game sweep of the University of San Francisco at Fowler Park. In West Coast Conference play, San Diego is tied for second place with Portland with a league 11-7 record. Coming off a trip to the NCAA Regionals last season, Brock Ungricht is in his second season as head coach of the program.
Justin DeCriscio tops the team with a .336 batting average and 11 stolen bases to go with three homers and 18 RBI. Kevin Sim leads the squad with 13 home runs, 40 RBI and 44 runs scored while batting .298. Angelo Peraza and Jack Costello have seven home runs apiece as well for the Toreros. Right hander Peter Michael earns the start against CSUN as he comes in with an 8.10 ERA and seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings. As a team, USD leads the WCC in walks (169) and is ranked third in on-base percentage (.383).
