Matadors Host First-Place Cal State Fullerton

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (24-11, 10-5 Big West) opens a three-game series with Big West-leading Cal State Fullerton at Matador Field this weekend. The series opens on Friday at 3 p.m. before continuing on Saturday at 2 p.m. and concluding at 1 p.m. All three games will stream on ESPN+ with Ghizal Hasan on the call while audio coverage can be found at GoMatadors.com/Radio.

LAST TIME OUT
CSUN got back on the winning track with a 7-4 win over the University of San Diego on Tuesday at Fowler Park. The Matadors claimed the season series from the Toreros with the victory after taking the first meeting at Matador Field on March 28. CSUN broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run eighth inning and added one more in the ninth to take the road contest.
As a team, seven Matador batters were hit by a pitch in the game while three hit batters occurred with the bases loaded including two runs in the four-run eighth. Kevin Fitzer drove in two runs on the night while Nathan Barraza and Emanuel Dean had two-hit games. Six Matador pitchers combined to strike out 11 batters with Ryan Dominguez tossing a team-high 2.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen.
MATADOR HEADLINES
CSUN enters the weekend tied for second place in The Big West with UC Santa Barbara with a 10-5 league record. Cal State Fullerton tops the league with a 15-3 record. The Matadors have completed half of their Big West schedule, winning four of five series including this past weekend's home series with Cal Poly. CSUN plays nine of its remaining 15 league games at Matador Field where the Matadors have gone 14-3 this season.
Joshua Romero's Big West-leading ninth save of the season on Tuesday tied him with four other Matadors for the third-most saves in a single season in team history. Romero is four saves away from breaking Conner O'Neil's record of 12 saves set during the 2015 season. On the career list, Romero is already tied for seventh place with Jimmy Jolicoeur (2006-10) with the nine saves.
CSUN remains The Big West leader in batting average at a .313 clip while the Matadors also lead in runs (275), RBI (256), sacrifice hits (26), stolen bases (55) and fielding percentage (.977). Nationally, the team is 19th in Division I baseball in batting average and 27th in sacrifice hits.
Individually, Jakob Simons tops The Big West in on-base percentage (.477) and stolen bases (10) while he ranks second in runs scored (36), slugging percentage (.730) and home runs (11) and third in batting average (.373) and RBI (38). Ali Camarillo checks in sixth in the conference in batting (.345), eighth in slugging percentage (.555) and 10th in RBI (31). Kevin Fitzer is also in The Big West's top-10 in RBI with his 34 the season, which ranks in sixth place. On the pitching side, Lucas Braun is second in innings pitched (59.2) and third in strikeouts (69). Thomas Bainton comes in second in the league in wins with five and sixth in innings pitched at 55.1.
SERIES HISTORY
In a series that dates back to 1966, Cal State Fullerton leads CSUN 80-56 all-time. The Matadors took their first series from the Titans in 20 seasons in 2022, when CSUN won two of three at Goodwin Field. CSUN's series win was just its third over the Titans since joining the Division I ranks.
CSUN is seeking its first-ever home series win against Cal State Fullerton (three or four games). The Titans have claimed all 10 three-games series at Matador Field since the Matadors joined The Big West while the teams split a four-game series in 2021. As a Division II member, CSUN won a two-game home series in 1971 from the Titans and have picked up eight other series victories in home-and-home formats.
SCOUTING CAL STATE FULLERTON
The Titans come in with a 24-12 overall record and 15-3 mark in The Big West. Earlier this week, Fullerton split a two-game series on the road at No. 17 Arizona State. The Titans have won 11 of 15 games on the road including going 8-1 in league action. Prior to the season, Fullerton was picked to finish fifth by the league's head coaches. Jason Dietrich is in his second season as head coach of the program.
Carter White leads The Big West in batting at a .381 clip to go with a team-high 35 runs scored. Nate Nankil sports a team-best 33 RBI with 16 doubles, 33 RBI and a .335 batting average. Brendan Bobo has the most homers on the team with six. Fynn Chester is 6-0 on the mound this season with a 2.49 ERA in 13 appearances. Tyler Stutlz has gone 5-2 in 10 starts with a team-best 53 strikeouts. Offensively, Fullerton is first in The Big West in doubles (88) and second in batting (.288).
