SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo (17-13) fell to No. 5 Hawai'i (20-5) 18-7 in a first round match at the Big West Championship on Friday. Valeria Martinez and Tatiana Smeltzer led the way with two goals apiece while Dorottya Telek finished her historic sophomore season with the Matadors with 101 goals. Meghan Lopez had 11 saves in front of the cage.
The Matadors would dig an early hole with the Rainbow Wahine picking up goals from Alba Bonamusa Boix and Bia Mantellato Dias for a 2-0 lead. Martinez though responded for the Matadors with back-to-back tallies to square the match at 2-2. Jordan Wedderburn gave Hawai'i the lead once more with 2:33 on the clock but Smeltzer struck the netting to pull CSUN even at 3-3 near the one-minute mark of the first period. CSUN was whistled for a costly exclusion on the ensuing possession leading to Mantellato Dias giving Hawai'i a 4-3 edge after eight minutes.
In the second period, Hawai'i pulled away, scoring the first four goals and seven total in the eight-minute quarter. Tatum Scarry and Shelby Hovanesian netted CSUN's two goals in the quarter but the Matadors went into intermission trailing 11-5.
Telek scored her 101st goal of the season with 4:06 left in the third period while the Matadors held the Rainbow Wahine to just two goals over the eight minutes.
In the fourth, Hawai'i put the game away with three early goals, stretching its lead to 16-6. Smeltzer found the back of the net for CSUN with three minutes left to play before the Rainbow Wahine added two more goals to close the match.
GAME NOTES
Dorottya Telek's 101 goals scored in 2023 is the new single-season benchmark in CSUN team history. Telek broke the previous single-season mark on March 7, set by Whitney Delgado in 2010, when she scored her 81st goal. On the CSUN career goals scored list, Telek is sixth with 178 goals.
Shelby Hovanesian finished her second season at CSUN with a career-high 33 goals, good for second-best on the team. Hovaensian posted four steals and two field blocks on Friday to go with her one goal.
Meghan Lopez surpassed Niki Van Vugt (2015-18) for fourth place on the Matadors' career saves list with 614.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"This team is the most cohesive group I've had yet at CSUN. From August to today, they've shown time and time again how much they genuinely care about each other. We end this season with 17 wins and a lot of lifelong memories and friendships. There are too many accomplishments to list, but we'll be back stronger than ever next year."
SEASON RECAP
The Matadors closed the season with a 17-13 overall record and a .567 winning percentage, both the highest under head coach Matt Warshaw. The team's win total is also the program's most since winning 23 games during the 2014 season.
